Under good conditions the seedling can thrive in soil that does not have any clay as long as it gets the proper nutrients and right amount of sunlight/water that it needs. Clay in soil can provide the nutrients necessary for seedlings to thrive but can also cause many negatives. One such con of using clay is that it does not absorbe water very well, this ultimately causes the soil to become waterlogged and drowns the plants as no oxygen can pass through. This would ultimately kill the plants.
