Owen kicked dirt beyond home plate, sending cloudy powder into the humid summer air. He scowled and pouted. He exhaled up at the sweat that trickled down his forehead as he hoisted the densely packed satchel from the ground. His baseball team, the Trail Blazers, had just won yet another series game; Owen, however, was feeling irritated.

He observed his teammates surrounding George, who had driven in the winning run. George was the team’s finest hitter, and the other players cheered, clapped, and high-fived him. The victory elated them.

On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig gave one of the most famous speeches in sports history. The occasion was "Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day" at Yankee Stadium in New York. Parts of the speech are well known to this day: "Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." The audio recording of his voice echoing throughout the stadium has been replayed countless times.
The "bad break" Gehrig alluded to in his speech was his contraction of a fatal disease known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. ALS is a neuromuscular disease that attacks nerve cells in the central nervous system, causing paralysis and eventually death. No one knows what causes ALS, and nearly 30,000 people in the United States live with the disease. Because of Gehrig's extreme celebrity and the tragedy of his death, ALS is commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Before the symptoms of ALS began causing problems for Gehrig, he was one of the greatest baseball players in history. Known as "The Iron Horse" because of his durability, Gehrig played in 2,130 straight games without an absence. The streak was cut short by Gehrig's retirement due to ALS. The streak of 2,130 consecutive games stood for 56 years until it was broken by Cal Ripken, Jr. in 1995. Sixty years after he retired, fans made him the leading vote-getter for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.
Over 70 years later, what many remember about Gehrig is his humbleness. He always recognized that he was, in his own words, "the luckiest man on the face of the earth." He had been given extraordinary athletic ability and played on one of the greatest baseball teams in history. He had loving, supportive parents and a wife of tremendous bravery. He was able to do what he loved most, play baseball, for 16 seasons. Though he died only two short years after his disease was diagnosed, Gehrig will long be remembered.

1 Have you ever heard of Old Stormalong, the greatest sailor of all time? He was so strong that he could win an arm wrestling contest with an octopus with one arm tied behind his back. He was so tall that he used the ship’s mast for a hat rack. And whenever the wind died down and becalmed the ship, Stormalong would take a seat at the stern and start whistling. With just one tune, he would puff out enough air to keep the ship sailing until the breeze picked up again. As you can imagine, ship captains loved having Stormalong aboard, even if it did require an extra supply room just to keep him fed.



2 There are a lot of good yarns about Stormalong. One about his teenage years has Stormy and his friends doing “cannonballs” from a diving raft. On Stormy’s first turn, he leaped out over the water, hugged his knees to his chest, and curled his body into a ball. His splash was HUGE! In fact, the spray created the Great Lakes. The ripples formed the currents that still circle through the oceans today.



3 When he was 18, Stormalong decided to become a sailor and set off for the nearest seaport. The captain saw him coming from two states away and signed him up before he even arrived. Though some in the crew were doubtful about his lack of experience, Stormalong promptly proved his worth.



4 Before the Panama Canal was built, ships traveling between the Atlantic and the Pacific had to sail around the tip of South America. On his very first voyage, Stormalong had lookout duty. He spotted a huge storm near the Falkland Islands. Going through the storm would mean certain disaster for the ship. However, the first mate refused to tell the captain, who was asleep in his cabin. “You can’t see the Falklands from here,” he scoffed. “Get back to your post.”



5 What could Stormalong do? Disobeying orders was a serious offense. He’d likely be severely punished. Even worse, he’d probably never get hired on a ship again. If he did obey the order, his shipmates might perish. Stormalong made his decision. He jumped overboard, picked up the vessel, hoisted it over Panama, and dropped it into the Pacific. The splash woke the captain. He was not angry at all about Stormalong taking matters into his own hands. In fact, he fired the first mate and offered Stormalong the job. (He also began promoting the idea of a canal across Panama.) Saving that ship made Stormalong an instant legend!
