Where does Tom guess Gatsby made his fortune? Where does Daisy say Gatsby made this money?
Tom speculates that Gatsby acquired his riches by engaging in criminal activities like bootlegging and smuggling in F. Scott Fitzgerald's book "The Great Gatsby." Gatsby's elaborate parties, pricey goods, and shrouded background all contribute to Tom's skepticism.
Daisy, however, informs Nick that Gatsby made his money through a network of pharmacies, which is the same tale Gatsby tells Nick earlier in the book. The truth behind Gatsby's fortune, however, turns out to be his involvement in organized crime, notably bootlegging and other illicit activities.
This tale was untrue, it is subsequently found. Daisy's naivete and maybe her yearning might be seen in her idea that Gatsby obtained his wealth via a respectable enterprise like a network of drugstores.

Answer: Ego Conflict
Explanation: If you view a conflict as a win-or-lose situation, you would engage in a(n) Ego Conflict.
If you view a conflict as a win-or-lose situation, you would engage in a competitive approach. This approach is characterized by focusing on one's own interests and attempting to come out on top at the expense of others.

How has The Tale of Genji had a lasting effect on Japanese culture?
People have adopted the religious beliefs described in the text.
Women could no longer write novels after the Heian period.
Government officials created laws based on parts of the story.
People still create art, literature, and drama based on the text.
Answer:
People still create art, literature, and drama based on the text.
Explanation:
The Tale of Genji, a story penned by the noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu, has been around for over a thousand years. Various commemorative activities are being conducted in locations that serve as the setting for the narrative. To commemorate the occasion, a rush of publications about the novel and its author have been produced, and museums are hosting special exhibitions. Despite the passing of a millennium, the work's appeal has not waned. The Heian era (794-1192) saw the flourishing of Japan's nobility's culture. A literary salon, which grew popular in the mid-Heian period and brought together skilled ladies-in-waiting in the living quarters of high-ranking women, including members of the imperial family, was one embodiment of this. Murasaki Shikibu, author of the 54-chapter The Tale of Genji, was one of the women at the salons. Some consider this long story to be the world's first novel, with documents dating it to the year 1008, exactly one thousand years ago. The Tale of Genji depicts the court's world and Hikaru Genji's amorous exploits as the "shining prince." The story eloquently recounts the beautiful lives of the ladies in Genji's life, the prince at his height, his awareness of life's transience in his old years, and the romantic affairs of his children and grandchildren through prose mixed with nearly 800 waka (31-syllable poems). The work is a monument of Japanese literature because of the well-developed storyline, complex character depictions, the beauty of the writing style, and the author's aesthetic sense with acute insight into the depiction of fleeting nature of existence. The Tale of Genji had a huge impact on Japanese culture, including literature, art, crafts, and the performing arts, and provided thematic material for a wide range of works and pursuits, including folding screens, picture scrolls, incense ceremonies, Noh, joruri (narrative chanting in bunraku puppet theater), and kabuki. It has been translated into 20 languages, including English and Chinese, and is widely read. The story is still popular among young Japanese, who may read Tanabe Seiko and Setouchi Jakucho's translations into modern Japanese, as well as a manga series based on the story called Asaki Yume Mishi, which has sold over 17 million copies to date. Six prominent authors of mobile phone novels, including Murasaki and Akashi, are now writing love stories based on modern versions of female characters from The Tale of Genji.
Write the instances of irony in the story two gentlemen of verona
"The Two Gentlemen of Verona" is a play by William Shakespeare, and it contains several instances of irony. Here are a few examples:
Proteus' loyalty: Proteus, one of the two gentlemen, initially appears to be a loyal friend to Valentine. However, he betrays Valentine by pursuing his love interest, Silvia, despite knowing that Valentine loves her. This ironic twist reveals the inconsistency in Proteus' character and his lack of true loyalty.
Julia's disguise: Julia disguises herself as a pageboy named Sebastian to follow Proteus to Milan. This situation creates dramatic irony since Proteus is unaware of Julia's presence and confides in her disguised persona about his feelings for Silvia, not realizing he is confiding in his own lover.
The ring: In the play, Proteus gives a ring to Julia as a symbol of his love and fidelity. However, when Proteus falls in love with Silvia, he offers the same ring to her as a token of his affection. This leads to a situation of situational irony where the ring, originally intended to represent loyalty, becomes a symbol of deceit and infidelity.
Outlaw's mercy: When Valentine is captured by a group of outlaws, their leader, the Duke of Milan, shows him unexpected mercy by releasing him. This act of mercy is ironic because the Duke of Milan is supposed to be a strict ruler, yet he exhibits compassion, contrasting with his position of authority.
These are just a few examples of irony in "The Two Gentlemen of Verona," as Shakespeare often used irony to highlight the complexities of human relationships and the flaws of his characters.

What lesson does American born learn from immigrants? Keep in mind unhomeliness and how the journey affects them.
Explanation:
From the time I was a young boy, I have been fascinated with astounding feats of accomplishment. I would sit in wonder listening to stories of my parents and grandparents and their adventures in the world. Jews who came from shtetls in Minsk, Lodz, Krakow, places of which I had never heard. They came with only a few suitcases and a deep reservoir of hope.
They came in search of a better life, even though they didn’t know exactly what that meant or what they would have to sacrifice. My parents, and those like them, achieved something remarkable. They became successful entrepreneurs, doctors, artists, philanthropists and scholars. They bought homes, raised families and sent their children to universities. Many achieved this in the first generation, and most by the second. I am fascinated with understanding the conditions that allow seemingly ordinary people to achieve extraordinary success in the face of extreme adversity. I have studied these lessons and have tried to apply them to my life and the clients I have served. When I listened to my family share their stories of coming to America, I distilled three conditions that seem to be common among immigrants who have achieved great success.
1. Commitment
The people I know who have attained what seemed unthinkable all focused more on commitment than belief. When I asked my mother if she believed that she and her family could have escaped the Holocaust and reimagined their life in America, she answered with little emotion: “We didn’t have a choice”. I have heard stories of how scared and confused immigrants were, not knowing if they would reach their destination or how they would survive once they arrived. These immigrants had to summon the will to prepare them for a radically different life.
When I have been faced with extreme adversity, my fears severely challenged my belief in myself. Yet my commitment was the force that propelled me forward. When my wife and I bought our first home and it was almost destroyed by fire soon after, I was in a perpetual state of fear. In retrospect, I can’t really say how strongly I believed we would succeed in our quest to rebuild our lives. Like my mother escaping the Holocaust, I didn’t think I had a choice. In some unknowable way, that commitment turned into belief.
2. Action mmigrants understand the absolute necessity of action. By action I mean consistent, planned, organized action over long periods of time. My grandfather’s commitment still strikes awe in me 50 years after hearing it. Joachim Shultz had a thriving business selling finely-made artists brushes in Germany in the years leading up to Hitler coming to power.3The concept of community has shifted radically since my grandparent’s time. Then community was rooted in where you lived; in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, Jewish immigrants who came from the same communities in Eastern Europe joined lantsman societies.
Authors often use suspense to keep the reader engaged in the story. Read the excerpt from "The Possibility of Evil" and analyze how Shirley Jackson creates suspense through setting, point of view, foreshadowing, and/or word choice. Use evidence from the text to support your response.
Answer:
In the excerpt from "The Possibility of Evil" by Shirley Jackson, the author effectively creates suspense through various literary techniques such as setting, point of view, foreshadowing, and word choice.
Explanation:
Firstly, the setting plays a crucial role in building suspense. The story takes place in a seemingly idyllic small town, with a picturesque setting described as "rose bushes, now fragrant with a late afternoon scent, lay across her path." This initial description creates a sense of tranquility and normalcy. However, as the story progresses, this peaceful setting becomes the backdrop for dark and sinister events, adding to the suspense. The contrast between the seemingly pleasant environment and the underlying evil that exists contributes to a growing sense of unease and anticipation.
Secondly, the point of view enhances the suspense in the story. The narration is presented from the perspective of Miss Strangeworth, the seemingly kind and respectable protagonist. However, the reader gradually becomes aware of her twisted and malicious thoughts as she secretly sends anonymous letters to her neighbors. This shift in the reader's perception of the main character creates a sense of unease and anticipation as the true nature of Miss Strangeworth's actions and intentions is slowly revealed.
Foreshadowing is another technique used by Shirley Jackson to build suspense. Throughout the excerpt, there are subtle hints and suggestions that something ominous is brewing beneath the surface of the seemingly peaceful town. For example, Miss Strangeworth notices "odd things," such as a "smudge of paint on a fence" and "a little pile of earth in a flower bed." These seemingly insignificant details foreshadow the disturbing secrets and conflicts that will be unveiled later in the story. The use of foreshadowing creates a sense of anticipation and keeps the reader engaged as they anticipate the reveal of these hidden elements.
Lastly, Shirley Jackson's careful word choice adds to the overall suspense. She uses descriptive language that is both vivid and ambiguous, leaving room for interpretation and speculation. For instance, she describes Miss Strangeworth's roses as "ugly" and suggests that "most people would have given up, thrown the seeds away." This choice of words generates curiosity and suspense, making the reader wonder why Miss Strangeworth is so invested in growing these particular roses and what significance they hold.
In conclusion, Shirley Jackson effectively employs setting, point of view, foreshadowing, and word choice to create suspense in "The Possibility of Evil." The idyllic setting, coupled with the dark undertones, the shift in the protagonist's perspective, the use of foreshadowing, and the carefully chosen words all contribute to a sense of unease and anticipation. These techniques engage the reader, keeping them engrossed in the story and eager to uncover the secrets hidden within the narrative.
