However they obtained it, the Greeks couldn’t resist adding their own original “explanations” to the definitions. For example, a Greek writer named Horapollo said correctly that the picture of a goose stood for the word “son.” But then he explained that this was because geese took special care of their young, which was completely inaccurate. He wrote that the image of a rabbit meant “open” because a rabbit's eyes never close—an equally false statement.

what do the grizzly bears do that angers the chief of the sky spirit

Answers

According to Native American legend, the grizzly bears is a powerful and revered animal that is associated with strength, protection, and wisdom.

However, in some stories, the grizzly bear is also known for its fierce and aggressive nature, which can sometimes lead to conflicts with humans and other animals. One such story involves the chief of the sky spirit, who was angered by the grizzly bear's behavior. The chief believed that the grizzly bears was too aggressive and violent, and that it posed a threat to the balance of nature. In particular, the chief was upset by the grizzly bear's habit of raiding human camps and attacking livestock. He believed that these actions were disrespectful to the humans and animals that the grizzly bear was harming, and that they were also a violation of the natural order of things. As a result, the chief of the sky spirit decided to punish the grizzly bear by taking away some of its power and prestige. He decreed that the grizzly bear would no longer be allowed to roam freely in the human world, and that it would have to stay in the wilderness where it could no longer cause harm. Overall, the story of the grizzly bear and the chief of the sky spirit highlights the complex relationship between humans and animals in Native American culture, and the importance of balance and harmony in the natural world.

(Setting: The Washington family’s kitchen)

JEANNETTE: I’ve perused this bevy of travel pamphlets and I have no inkling of where I want to go on vacation. I thought about attending a performance at the city’s amphitheater; however, the city will be in bedlam with the performance and the sporting event occurring simultaneously.

MOM: I didn’t find a worthwhile destination either.

KENNETH: I’ve concluded that we should embark on an exhilarating and exciting trip this year—something we’ve never done before.

MOM: I don’t want to dismiss your idea, Kenneth, but where can find such an awe-inspiring experience?

KENNETH: I thought we could hike up Mount Whitney—it’s the highest peak in California. Because it’s located on the border of Inyo and Tulare counties, it’s also relatively close to home. Since we’re all strong athletes, I think that making the ascent is feasible.

JEANNETTE: (to Kenneth) That sounds like an awesome and memorable trip; however, there’s one problem with your plan—I suffer from acrophobia.

KENNETH: (with a look of befuddlement) Acro- what?

MOM: Acrophobia—it means that Jeannette suffers from a fear of heights. The root word phobia, meaning “fear of,” comes from the Greek word –phobos, which means “fearing.” Acrophobia is one of the most prevalent phobias in the country.

KENNETH: (to Jeannette) I recall a few years ago when we traveled on an airplane to Aunt Janice’s house—you were enthralled, peering out the window at the scene below.

JEANNETTE: I did have a tremendous time on the airplane; however, after that trip, my phobia gradually progressed, and now merely thinking about flying evokes terror and makes me squeamish. For me, riding the elevator to the top floor of a tall building is much like trekking up Mount Everest—it’s a gigantic feat of willpower.

MOM: Sometimes the best way to get over a fear is to face it. Perhaps we should try to climb the mountain so that Jeannette can tackle her fear. Do you think it would intolerable for you, Jeannette?

JEANNETTE: (with a look of trepidation) I don’t believe I would be very excited during the ascent, and I may not reach the apex; yet, I would savor the astonishing panoramic views. But what if I lost my composure and chose not to climb with you? I would be loath to jeopardize your trip.

DAD: Jeannette, we’re a family; we must always support each other. I believe that if you’re brave enough to attempt the climb, we should be more than willing to stop if you feel overwhelmed or extremely uneasy.

MOM: Just trying is an immeasurable accomplishment!

KENNETH: I’ll have a wonderful vacation as long as I get to view the noteworthy peak; everything else is secondary to me. What’s your verdict, Jeannette?

JEANNETTE: The thought of scaling a gigantic mountain is both scary and exhilarating. I must admit, the allure of Mount Whitney seems to trump my trepidation, and it would be incredible to overcome my fear. So, I suppose there is only one thing left to do—pack!

The author uses the simile in this sentence to show that Peter scatters their contents as kings toss ha'pence to the crowd.

What is Simile?

A simile is a rhetorical device in which two objects are closely contrasted.

Similes are different from metaphors in that they emphasize the similarities between two things using comparison words like "like," "as," "so," or "then," whereas metaphors imply a comparison between two things (i.e. saying something "is" something else). The words' etymologies' make this distinction clear. The metaphor comes from the Greek word metaphor, whereas simile comes from the Latin word similes ("like, like") ("to transfer").

Let's catch up; it's been a minute is another way of stating it.

It is preferable to use the full word minutes rather than an acronym. A minute is a time interval that consists of sixty seconds. The notes made during a formal meeting are referred to as minutes in the noun form. Commonly used as an acronym is min.

the effectiveness of the essay method is affected by the rater's writing skills.

Answers

The effectiveness of the essay method can indeed be influenced by the writing skills of the rater. The essay method is a subjective form of evaluation where raters assess the performance of individuals based on written descriptions or narratives. The quality and accuracy of the rater's writing can impact the reliability and validity of the evaluations.

Here are a few reasons why the rater's writing skills can affect the effectiveness of the essay method:

Clarity of Communication: Raters with poor writing skills may struggle to express their thoughts and observations clearly. Unclear or ambiguous feedback can lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations by the individuals being evaluated, affecting the accuracy of the assessment.

Coherence and Structure: Well-structured essays with logical flow are essential for effective communication. If the rater lacks the ability to organize their thoughts and present them in a coherent manner, the evaluation may lack clarity and coherence, making it challenging for the reader to understand and interpret the assessment accurately.

Vocabulary and Grammar: The use of appropriate vocabulary and correct grammar is crucial for conveying precise meaning. Raters with limited vocabulary or poor grammar skills may struggle to articulate their evaluations accurately, leading to potential confusion or misrepresentation of the individual's performance.

Bias and Subjectivity: The essay method is inherently subjective, as it relies on the rater's judgment and interpretation of the individual's performance. Poor writing skills can inadvertently introduce additional biases or inconsistencies into the evaluation process, as the rater may struggle to articulate their assessments objectively.

Interpretation and Analysis: Effective essay raters possess the ability to analyze and interpret the information they gather while evaluating an individual's performance. Raters with weak writing skills may find it challenging to analyze and synthesize the information effectively, leading to incomplete or inaccurate evaluations.

Every day or two I strolled to the village to hear some of the gossip which is incessantly going on there, circulating either from mouth to mouth, or from newspaper to newspaper, and which, taken in homeopathic doses, was really as refreshing in its way as the rustle of leaves and the peeping of frogs. As I walked in the woods to see the birds and squirrels, so I walked in the village to see the men and boys; instead of the wind among the pines I heard the carts rattle.

Which is the best example of a vivid sensory detail?
“I strolled to the village”
“to hear some of the gossip which is incessantly going on there”
“as the rustle of leaves and the peeping of frogs”
“As I walked in the woods”

Answers

The best example among the choices of a vivid sensory detail is option C, “as the rustle of leaves and the peeping of frogs,” which appeals to our hearing.

What is a sensory detail?

A sensory detail is simply a piece of information or description that appeals to one of our five senses. Authors use sensory details to build imagery in their texts, allowing readers to feel involved in the scene as if they can really see and hear, for example, the same as the characters and narrator.

That is why option C is the right answer for this question. The words "rustle" and "peeping" appear to our sense of hearing. We can imagine the sounds the narrator is hearing at that moment because of those words.

Answers

As I was taking this multiple-choice quiz, I applied a few different strategies to help me answer the questions correctly. One strategy I used was to carefully read through each question and all of the answer choices before making a selection.

I find that this helps me to better understand what the question is asking and to eliminate any obviously incorrect answer choices.

Another strategy I used was to pay attention to any clues or hints that were provided in the question or in the passages. For example, if the question included words like "always" or "never," I knew that these were strong indicators that I needed to choose an answer that was absolute and not qualified in any way.

Overall, I think these strategies helped me to answer more questions correctly and to move through the quiz more quickly. By taking the time to carefully read and understand each question, I was able to eliminate incorrect answer choices and narrow my focus to the most likely correct answer.

Two questions that I feel confident I answered correctly were:

Which of the following best describes the main idea of the passage?

For this question, I carefully read through the passage and identified the central theme or message. I then looked at the answer choices and selected the one that most closely aligned with the main idea of the passage. I chose this answer because it accurately captured the main idea and included key details from the passage.

According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

For this question, I read through the answer choices and selected the one that was not supported by the information in the passage. I knew that this was the correct answer because it was the only choice that was not directly supported by the information in the passage.

One question that I think I might have missed was:

Which of the following is the best definition of the word "abstemious"?

This question was challenging for me because I was not familiar with the word "abstemious." I tried to use context clues from the passage to determine its meaning, but I was still unsure.

In the end, I had to make an educated guess and choose the answer that I thought was most likely to be correct. I chose the answer "moderate in eating and drinking" because it seemed to fit the context of the passage. However, upon reflection, I now realize that the correct answer was actually "abstaining from food and drink."

In 300 words or less, explore how the external events of the plot of "The Most Dangerous Game" affect an internal change within Sanger Rainsford.

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

In "The Most Dangerous Game", a short story by Richard Connell,  the main character, Sanger Rainsford, undergoes an internal change due to external events. Rainsford is a famous skilled hunter. His view on the world, and especially of the hunt, is quite set in an advantageous manner, but only for himself. To Rainsford, there is no reason to empathize with the animals he kills. The world is divided into hunters and huntees, and he sees himself as lucky for belonging to the former instead of the latter.

Ironically, this luck of his will change dramatically because of another hunter who shares that perspective and opinion. General Zaroff, also talented and skilled, is a hunter of men. He grew tired of chasing beasts that are incapable of reasoning. In search of a better challenge, Zaroff began to prey on his fellow human beings. Rainsford accidentally lands on Zaroff's island and becomes the general's next game.

Rainsford is now just like one of the animals he once hunted, and this conflict is bound to change him internally. He can finally empathize with the fear and despair the animals felt while trying to escape him. Rainsford is given nothing but a knife, clothes, and some food. Zaroff, on the other hand, has a gun and hound dogs. Rainsford has to rely on his basic survival instincts to outsmart the general.

We must note, however, that Rainsford is a human being. He is capable of reasoning, and is more than skilled and smart enough to find a way to beat Zaroff. But, until that happens, he goes through the agony of having to run for his life, to hide in fear. The external event of being hunted certainly changes Rainsford into a man capable of empathizing.

FRONT PAGE Paying to Pollute in California California has been a leader in the battle against climate change. One of its major weapons is its cap-and-trade program. The state has set an ambitious goal: a reduction in greenhouse emissions of 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. Each year the California Air Resources Board (CARB) lowers the maximum allowable level of CO2 emissions (the "cap") generated by power companies, large industrial plants, and fuel distributors. Then it gives these firms free "allowances" that permit the holder to emit one ton greenhouse gases per year. The companies are then free to trade these allowances, an exchange that is facilitated by quarterly auctions. At the latest auction, over 65 million 1-ton allowances were traded, at an average price of roughly $17. Companies with abatement costs greater than $17 per ton are the principal buyers.
