Q.25
This passage is taken from a letter written by a father to his son.

DEAR BOY, Bath, October the 4th, O. S. 1746.

Though I employ so much of my time in writing to you, I confess I have often my doubts whether it is to any purpose. I know how unwelcome advice generally is; I know that those who want it most like it and follow it least; and I know, too, that the advice of parents, more particularly, is ascribed to the moroseness, the imperiousness, or the garrulity of old age. But then, on the other hand, I flatter myself, that as your own reason (though too young as yet to suggest much to you of itself) is, however, strong enough to enable you both to judge of and receive plain truths: I flatter myself, I say, that your own reason, young as it is, must tell you, that I can have no interest but yours in the advice I give you; and that, consequently, you will at least weigh and consider it well: in which case, some of it will, I hope, have its effect. Do not think that I mean to dictate as a parent; I only mean to advise as a friend, and an indulgent one too: and do not apprehend that I mean to check your pleasures; of which, on the contrary, I only desire to be the guide, not the censor. Let my experience supply your want of it, and clear your way in the progress of your youth of those thorns and briers which scratched and disfigured me in the course of mine. I do not, therefore, so much as hint to you how absolutely dependent you are upon me; that you neither have nor can have a shilling in the world but from me; and that, as I have no womanish weakness for your person, your merit must and will be the only measure of my kindness. I say, I do not hint these things to you, because I am convinced that you will act right upon more noble and generous principles; I mean, for the sake of doing right, and out of affection and gratitude to me.

I have so often recommended to you attention and application to whatever you learn, that I do not mention them now as duties, but I point them out to you as conducive, nay, absolutely necessary, to your pleasures; for can there be a greater pleasure than to be universally allowed to excel those of one's own age and manner of life? And, consequently, can there be anything more mortifying than to be excelled by them? In this latter case, your shame and regret must be greater than anybody's, because everybody knows the uncommon care which has been taken of your education, and the opportunities you have had of knowing more than others of your age. I do not confine the application which I recommend, singly to the view and emulation of excelling others (though that is a very sensible pleasure and a very I warrantable pride); but I mean likewise to excel in the thing itself: for, in my mind, one may as well not know a thing at all, as know it but imperfectly. To know a little of anything, gives neither satisfaction nor credit, but often brings disgrace or ridicule.

The son, to whom the letter is addressed, can best be described as

A. moderately unmotivated
B. disgracefully disobedient
C. fiendishly dishonest
D. overwhelmingly shy
E. unnaturally focused

Answers

Answer 1

The son, to whom the letter is addressed, can best be described as unnaturally focused (option e).

The father, in his letter, explains to his son how necessary it is to be attentive and devoted to learning, citing the great pleasure that comes from being universally considered superior to one's peers in the same field.

The father reminds his son that he can have no greater satisfaction than to be the best at what he does, regardless of what that thing may be. In order to achieve this, the father believes that the son must take his studies seriously and work hard to excel.

The father goes on to say that half-hearted knowledge can be a source of ridicule and disgrace and urges the son to strive for a thorough understanding of whatever he is studying.

This implies that the son is unnaturally focused, which means that he is focusing on one thing to the extent that it becomes a significant part of his life. Thus, the correct option is e.

Answers

Answer:

Manipulation

Flannery O'Connor understood her story "A Good Man is Hard to Find" as a tale of good, evil, and divine grace. Other critics, however, have seen in it something more cynical. Many see it as the story of a selfish woman who uses manipulation to get what she wants, but is ultimately unable to save herself by her acts. There are several moments in the story when the grandmother manipulates others, including her family members and the criminal. An interesting question is whether she ever stops manipulating, and if so, when.

Chew on This

The grandmother never stops trying to manipulate The Misfit, and is stopped only when he kills her.

The grandmother's attempts to save her life are desperate from the beginning, and can hardly be considered deliberate manipulation.

Friedrich Nietzsche is a German philosopher that was born in 1844 and died in 1900. He was averse to the concept of morality.

He believed that when humans formulate concepts on morality, they limit themselves from experiencing and being their true nature.

He proposed that most of these ideals were simply invented by man and were not absolute. For example, he mentioned that the belief in God was limiting because people will be restricted from doing certain things.

When you fear punishment from a higher being, you may not want to do things you normally would.

7. Why does Abigail accuse Tituba? Why does Hale believe Abigail rather than Tituba? How does he lead Tituba into naming names? Why do Abigail and Betty name names?

Answers

Answer:

1. The Salem settlement needed a theocracy during its nascent years because it provided a sense of unity and cohesiveness that was vital for the initial survival of the settlement. The theocratic government promoted the principles of taking care of one's neighbor, and the community looked out for one another.

The settlers began to turn towards individualism because they were seeking freedom. But because they had been other a theocracy for so long, anyone who tried to break the rules were considered as a lawbreaker.

2. Miller characterizes Parris as someone who is selfish and worries too much about his reputation. Parris is always anxious and worries about everything.

Parris is highly suspicious. Sees them as his enemies and is afraid they are out to ruin him. He is unhappy with his parishioners because they are not supporting him with necessary supplies for livelihood.

3. Putnam is willing to speak of witchcraft because he wants their land. Mrs. Putnam knows about Ruth in the woods because she sent Ruth to contact her dead babies' spirits.

How does Mrs. Putnam know what Ruth was doing in the woods? Mrs. Putnam knows what Ruth was doing because she asked Ruth to go to Tituba to raise her children from the dead.

4. Abigail admits tituba and Ruth were conjuring spirits so that she will appear as an innocent victim. She is afraid that the others will confess to ruin her reputation and she'll be exposed as a liar.

Why is Abigail afraid the others will confess what they were doing in the woods? She is afraid because she knows that they will incriminate her.

Abigail uses her authority to create an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. She threatens the other girls with violence if they refuse to go along with her plans, and she does not hesitate to accuse them of witchcraft if their loyalty proves untrue. Such is the case with Mary Warren.

Abigail treath her uncle with respect. Why has Abigail been asked to leave the Proctor's home? Abigail was asked to leave the Proctor's home because Elizabeth suspects that Abigail and Proctor have had an affair.

5. Halfway through the first act, Arthur Miller gives us a brief scene of John Proctor and Abigail together, revealing they have had a sexual affair. Abigail is still in love with John, and wants to believe that he is still in love with her (even after he says he is not).

Abigail still loves John and she not only is antagonistic toward Elizabeth because Elizabeth asked Abigail to leave the Proctor house, she is jealous of Elizabeth. Abigail sees Elizabeth as an impediment to her own happiness and she thinks if Elizabeth is out of the way, she can have John.

Abigail was once the servant for the Proctor household, but Elizabeth Proctor fired her after she discovered that Abigail was having an affair with her husband, John Proctor.

Why does Abigail tell John Proctor what happened to Betty? Abigail trusts John and thinks its safe to tell him what happened to Betty i not witchcraft but instead just fear.

6. Proctor and Rebecca speak out against Hale's coming because they do not think the incidence is serious enough to warrant an outsider coming to help with their community's affairs. b) Proctor has set himself against Parris because he dislikes Reverend Parris' focus on Satan and Hell instead of God and Heaven.

Proctor has set himself against Parris because he dislikes Reverend Parris' focus on Satan and Hell instead of God and Heaven.

Those waiting at the bedside become much more antagonistic and volatile when Rebecca leaves. Why does Abigail accuse Tituba? a) Abigail accuses Tituba because she feels others will think witchcraft is something Tituba would likely be involved in.

7. Abigail seems to believe in Tituba's powers to the extent that she gets Tituba to make a potion to kill Goody Proctor (presumably so Abigail can marry John). When it starts to seem like this information might come out, however, Abigail preemptively accuses Tituba of bewitching her and Betty in order to save herself.

Why does Hale believe Abigail rather than Tituba? Hale believes Abigail more than Tituba, because Tituba is a slave and does not have the full trust of those that live in the community.

Hale leads Tituba into naming names by putting words in her mouth and kind of giving her a way out. Abigail and Betty name names to completely get the blame off of them and to focus it on the others.

In Act I, Abigail and Betty start shouting the names of supposed witches in order to distract attention from their own misbehavior. They know that the penalty for dancing in the forest is whipping.

Write a 200-300 movie critique on Divergent and discuss its portrayal of culture. Are there stereotypes? Positive or negative? Use its setting plot and theme to describe.

Answers

Movie Critique: Divergent

Divergent is a captivating dystopian film that delves into the concept of a divided society based on distinct personality traits. Set in a post-apocalyptic Chicago, the movie explores the complex dynamics of a society divided into factions and the challenges faced by those who defy categorization. While the film presents a compelling storyline and engaging characters, its portrayal of culture raises some questions about stereotypes.

One aspect of Divergent's portrayal of culture is the existence of factions, each representing a specific personality trait. The factions - Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite - are meant to encompass various aspects of human nature. However, this division into distinct categories can be seen as potentially reinforcing stereotypes. For instance, Abnegation represents selflessness, while Dauntless embodies bravery. While these traits can be admirable, the film may inadvertently reinforce the notion that individuals can be easily pigeonholed into these singular characteristics.

On the other hand, Divergent also challenges these stereotypes by highlighting the complexity of human nature. The protagonist, Beatrice "Tris" Prior, emerges as a Divergent, someone who does not fit neatly into any one faction. Her journey of self-discovery and her refusal to conform to societal expectations demonstrate the film's underlying theme of embracing individuality and breaking free from stereotypes.

Furthermore, Divergent's setting, a dystopian Chicago, adds depth to its portrayal of culture. The decaying urban landscape serves as a visual representation of a society in turmoil, with factions competing for power and control. This backdrop enhances the film's exploration of the consequences of a deeply divided culture and the struggles faced by those who challenge the status quo.

In terms of plot and theme, Divergent effectively captures the tension and conflicts that arise when individuals challenge the societal norms imposed upon them. The film raises thought-provoking questions about conformity, identity, and the limitations of labeling individuals based on predetermined traits. By emphasizing the importance of embracing one's unique qualities, Divergent encourages viewers to question and resist societal expectations.

In conclusion, Divergent offers an intriguing movie experience with its dystopian setting, engaging plot, and thought-provoking themes. While its portrayal of culture raises some concerns about potential stereotypes, the film also challenges these stereotypes by highlighting the complexity of human nature and the power of individuality. By encouraging viewers to question societal norms, Divergent serves as a reminder of the importance of embracing diversity and resisting conformity.
