In reading 6 ( Laches ) , Socrates & his friends talk about courage . What sort of progress do they make in getting at the true meaning of courage ? Do you think it matters to understand courage better ? Why or why not ?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:
In Plato’s dialogue Laches, Socrates and his friends discuss the nature of courage. Laches initially defines a man of courage as one who does not run away from an enemy. However, Socrates explains that this definition does not cover all cases of courage, so Laches must come up with a more general definition. Laches then defines courage as “an endurance of the soul.” However, Socrates points out that not all instances of endurance are courageous, for some can be foolish and counterproductive.

Understanding the nature of courage can help individuals recognize and appreciate acts of courage in themselves and others. It can also help individuals make better decisions in difficult situations, as well as help them develop the strength and resilience to face challenges and overcome fears. Additionally, understanding courage can inspire individuals to take action and make positive changes in their lives and in the world around them.

^THE BLESSING IN DISGUISE^

Once upon a time in the lad of Tabuluka, there was a boy named Songa. Songa was well-behaved and was of transparent honesty. He had a great problem, in that he was an orphan, having lost his father three months before he was born, and his mother six months after he was born. He had faced the problem of lack of care. He withdrew from school at the age of seven when there was nobody to sponsor his education any longer. He had no alternative but to seek a menial job. He secured a job as a messenger to the king of Tabuluka.

He was diligent in the discharge of his duty to the king. Unlike the rest of the messengers, he was very trustworthy and an embodiment of honesty. To crown it all, he was very handsome but remained very poor. The only solace he had was that he was very much admired by the king and the queen. After working with the king for twenty-five years he was faced with the greatest temptation of his life. By this time he was fully grown up and had learned a lot through the king’s high chiefs who formed the cabinet. Indeed, it was a monarchy, that is, a government headed by the king. He was sufficiently lettered and could communicate in the language of administration. He had undergone various diplomatic courses. He had been promoted from a messenger to the position of the king’s protocol officer. The promotion was rather very fast considering his background.

Songa had acquired a new status as he had become the cynosure of all eyes. He was loved by the queen but she could not openly tell him. The queen made several attempts with the hope that Songa would sleep with her but he couldn’t get the signal. The queen who had been instrumental to the boy’s rapid promotion formally called Soga and told him how much she loved him due to his level of honesty, diligence, and sense of responsibility. She said she would give him an assignment at a later date and failure to carry it out would lead to death. Songa was ready to carry out any assignment provided it was not to kill.

One day when the king was on tours of his vassal states, the queen called Songa, the king’s protocol officer to her bedroom. The queen then locked the door after Songa had entered. Songa was afraid thinking that the queen might use him for rituals but he had no alternative than to obey. The queen then told Songa her age-long secret love for him and then requested that he sleep with her. Songa couldn’t believe his ears as he struggled to run out of the room. Having noticed Songa’s attempt, the queen raised an alarm to attract the people in the neighborhood. She said that Songa attempted to ra8e her. Songa had no defense as he was given no time for that. Nobody gave it a second thought. The king arrived from his tour and was told what Songa was up to. The court of the land sentenced Songa to death after confirmation by the king. That was how he became a prisoner of conscience.

He was in prison for another ten years during which his honesty and faith in God waxed stronger than before. He was not deterred by the death sentence. He was loved by all prisoners and warders. Songa was reputed to be a dream translation. He would analyze any dream dreamt by anybody in prison and beyond. One day the king dreamt a dream and was confused as he didn’t know the significance. The director of the prison in the land told the king that there was a prisoner who could analyze the king’s dream. The king vowed to divide his kingdom into two for anyone who could analyze the dream. In no long a time Songa was brought and he absolutely resolved and analyzed the dream. The king was joyful and granted Songa a monarchical amnesty and pardon and was subsequently appointed the Prime Minister of the Tabuluka Kingdom. So you see every disappointment is a blessing in disguise.

In Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island, the jolly boat sinks when the crew of the Hispaniola are attacked by buccaneers led by Long John Silver. The jolly boat is overloaded with crew and treasure, and when the buccaneers fire upon it, the jolly boat takes on water and sinks.

The jolly boat sinks when the pirates attempt to use it as a makeshift raft to escape from the Hispaniola. After being pursued by a pursuing navy vessel, the pirates overload the jolly boat and it eventually takes on too much water and sinks, causing the pirates to abandon it and swim to the nearby island.

The jolly boat sinks when it is attacked by a group of pirates. The Union Jack gave the pirates something to rally around and unify them in their mission to search for the buried treasure. Shines white mouthwash recommended by dentists Ethos, Logos, or Pathos identify how its being used

Answers

Answer:

Ethos

Explanation:

To answer this question, you have to understand the definitions of ethos, logos, and pathos. These are all methods of persuasion, meaning that they are methods of trying to influence someone. Ethos tries to persuade by building up the credibility or authority of the person making the argument. Logos tries to persuade by using pure reason or logic. Finally, pathos tries to persuade by appealing to emotions.

The sentence given is, "Shines white mouthwash recommended by dentists." This sentence doesn't try to persuade through logic, nor does it try to persuade by appealing to emotions. It does, however, attempt to build up the credibility of the person making the argument by claiming that the product is endorsed by dentists. So, this is an example of an argument being made through ethos.

Hopefully that's helpful! :)

Answer:

Ethos.

Explanation:

The sentence assumes that the company "shines"'s mouthwash is recommended by dentists, who typically deal with the mouth and teeths. This means that the ad is appealing to ethos, or the general public's trust of doctors and their recommendations.

Explaining the 3 types of appeals:

Ethos: Ethos is the appeal of authority. For example, the words of a leader of a community may be held to higher regard and may appear to be more trustworthy than the words of a random person you do not know particularly well personally. For example,

We are part of the Catholic Church. James is the current sitting pope. James says that we should help a community in need. Therefore, because the Pope is regarded as the highest office in the Catholic Church, we will help the community.

Logos: Logos is the appeal to logic. Typically, this would mean that they will use analysis or historical examples to back up the argument. For example,

A woman is described as a adult female human who, all things considered normal, have the capacity to conceive. Joan has the capacity to conceive, though she is sterile. Therefore, Joan is a woman.

Pathos: Pathos is the appeal to emotions. Typically, this would be used in persuading a person, typically to obtain them in joining their side, or to obtain some sort of "gift".  For example,

There are large amounts of people who are dying of hunger in Africa. Therefore, we should donate to this charity that helps fund volunteers and buy and transport food to people who need it in Africa.

Explanation:

In Chapter Five of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the creature confronts Victor and demands that he create a mate for him. The short film adaptation of this chapter also includes this confrontation, but there are some key differences between the two. One difference is that the film includes a scene where the creature attacks Victor, while this does not happen in the book. Another difference is that the film does not include any of the inner turmoil or moral grappling that Victor experiences in the book as he contemplates creating a mate for the creature. To better match the tone and mood of Shelley's version, the film could include a scene where Victor reflects on the ethical implications of creating life, or include more dialogue between Victor and the creature where they discuss the creature's motivations and desires. Additionally, the use of darker lighting and ominous music could help to convey the sense of danger and unease present in the book.

The detail from the text that best supports the answer to Part A is "...a mob gathered outside the jail where the boys were held..." (Paragraph 4). The correct option is C.

This detail shows that the community was quick to believe the false accusations against the nine black teenagers and was willing to take matters into their own hands. The fact that a mob gathered outside the jail implies that they were prepared to use violence to take revenge on the accused without waiting for a fair trial.
