Elie's initial reaction to the beating was watching and not moving. Elie did not move, and he kept silent and he even thought of moving away so he would not be hit.

He however, began to feel anger toward his father and questioning why he couldn't dodge Idek's anger. When Idek was angry he just looked for someone to beat on and look for someone to hurt, and Elie's father just happened to be in his way this time.
