Tales of the Deep: The Giant Squid
By Carter Madison

Have you ever wondered what swims in the deepest parts of the world's oceans? Well, we just got a better idea about one mysterious creature of the deep ocean: the giant squid.

Just recently a Japanese film crew managed to film a giant squid swimming in its natural habitat. They managed to lure it to their cameras with bait after many hours of waiting and searching two thousand feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean.

The giant squid is truly a giant. It can grow up to 50 feet in length, with tentacles making up most of this great length. For comparison, 50 feet is about as long as most school buses. Imagine meeting something the size of your school bus in the deep dark ocean and you might get an idea what it is like to meet a squid.

Over the centuries, many squid specimens have been found, but it's hard to get an idea of how the squid lives because it typically cruises in the deepest depths of the ocean. We know that the giant squid's main predator is the sperm whale. We know this because bits of giant squid have been found in the stomachs of sperm whales. We also know they feed on deep-sea fish and other squid. We know this because of all the giant squid that have washed ashore.

The giant squid lives in all the world's oceans, though few are found in the tropics or the Arctic waters. As a result, stories of giant squid were told among sailors for hundreds of years. These sightings must have been frightening and may be the source for the legend of the Kraken, a sea monster reputed to be as large as an island and capable of eating an entire ship.

Which of the following sentences from the text provides the least support for the central idea of the passage?

The Soweto uprising in 1976 contributed largely in changing, among other things, the landscape of the education system in South Africa.
Write an essay to respond to the question: What can we learn from the youth of 1976, and are these lessons still applicable to the youth of today?

Answers

Answer:

The Soweto uprising of 1976 was a pivotal moment in South African history, as it marked the beginning of a widespread youth resistance against apartheid and contributed significantly to the eventual dismantling of the apartheid regime. The uprising was sparked by the government's decision to implement Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools, which was seen as a move to further marginalize black students and undermine their education. The youth of 1976 played a critical role in challenging this injustice and fighting for their right to education. So, what can we learn from their actions, and are these lessons still applicable to the youth of today?

Firstly, the youth of 1976 showed us the power of collective action and the importance of solidarity in the face of oppression. The uprising was largely driven by young people who came together to protest against the government's decision, despite the risks involved. They recognized that they were stronger together than they were as individuals, and their collective action ultimately forced the government to reconsider its position. This lesson is still highly relevant to the youth of today, who continue to face various forms of discrimination and marginalization. By working together and standing in solidarity with one another, young people can create real change and challenge the status quo.

Secondly, the youth of 1976 demonstrated the importance of education as a tool for empowerment and liberation. They recognized that the government's decision to implement Afrikaans as the language of instruction was an attempt to limit their education and keep them oppressed. They protested not only for their right to education but also for their right to receive an education that was relevant to their experiences and culture. This lesson is still applicable to young people today, who must understand the value of education and its role in creating a more just and equitable society.

Thirdly, the youth of 1976 showed us that protest and civil disobedience can be effective tools for challenging injustice and creating change. The Soweto uprising was a peaceful protest that quickly turned violent as police responded with force, but the youth continued to resist in various ways. They boycotted classes, organized rallies, and used graffiti and posters to spread their message. Their actions inspired others to join the struggle and helped to shine a light on the injustices of apartheid. This lesson is still relevant today, as young people continue to fight for a more just and equitable society. By engaging in peaceful protest and civil disobedience, they can challenge the status quo and push for change.

In conclusion, the youth of 1976 set an inspiring example of resistance and resilience in the face of oppression. Their actions continue to inspire young people today, and the lessons they taught us about collective action, education, and civil disobedience remain highly relevant. By learning from their example and continuing to fight for justice and equality, young people can create a better future for themselves and for generations to come.

What made northern and southern women different from one another?

The different roles that women played in northern and southern antebellum culture contributed to the cultural tension that existed between the two regions of the country at the time. Although women from the north and the south shared control over the home, the tasks that each group of women was expected to complete were distinct.

In addition to doing housework, northern women frequently assisted their husbands with farm and business tasks, whereas southern women were discouraged from doing "men's work." In the North, wives frequently assisted their husbands with farm and business work.

Which option best completes the diagram?
?
OA. American workers lose job opportunities.
OB. Companies fail to take environmental protection into account.
OC. Americans look for chances to live in foreign countries.
OD. Foreign goods begin to become more popular than American
goods.

Answers

Option D. Companies take advantage of lower wages abroad.

When companies have the ability to relocate anywhere on the globe due to free trade, they often exploit the opportunity to take advantage of lower wages in foreign countries. By outsourcing their operations to regions with lower labor costs, companies can reduce their expenses and increase their profit margins. This practice raises concerns among American workers as it directly affects their job opportunities.

With companies opting for cheaper labor abroad, they may choose to lay off domestic workers or reduce their workforce, leading to unemployment or underemployment among American workers. This trend not only impacts individual livelihoods but also has broader implications for the economy and society, such as increased income inequality and economic insecurity.

The concern stems from the fact that American workers may find it challenging to compete with the lower wages offered in other countries. This situation can lead to job losses in industries that are particularly susceptible to outsourcing, such as manufacturing and customer service.

In summary, the ability of companies to take advantage of lower wages abroad through outsourcing raises concerns among American workers regarding the potential loss of job opportunities, income inequality, and economic insecurity. Therefore the correct option is D

How did the growth of manufacturing affect the oil industry

Answers

Answer: As oil productions and refining and increased, prices collapsed,… the tremendous growth of standard did not occur without competition

Explanation:

Really don’t know how to explain that ‍♀️

You have learned that one of the major points of debate during the Enlightenment was human nature. The three most famous positions were as follows:
Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679): People are naturally selfish and evil; without a strong civilizing government to restrain humanity's violent impulses, the "state of nature" is a "war of all against all" and life is "nasty, brutish, and short."
John Locke (1632–1704): People are born blank slates, neither good nor bad. For that reason, each generation must take great care what environment they raise the next generation in, because everything they think will be based on what they are taught by people and circumstances.
John-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778): People are born naturally good and civilization corrupts them. If people could just ignore the confusing influence of social conventions and follow their natural instincts the world would be much better.
For this assignment, you will need to follow the essay format as made famous by Michel de Montaigne. He is credited with creating the essay, which literally comes from the French word for "trial," as in a weighing of evidence—so you can blame Montaigne for the essay.
Step 1:
Start by evaluating the three positions outlined above, one at a time. For each, consider evidence that supports it and evidence that raises a problem for it. This is your personal reflection, so you can do research but for your evidence you may also just use your personal observations: have you seen yourself and others demonstrate natural goodness, badness, or neutrality? You should dedicate one full paragraph to each position.
Evaluate the three positions. One paragraph for each position

Paragraph 1:

Paragraph 2:

Paragraph 3:

Step 2:
Having considered each, identify which of the three positions makes the most sense to you and explain why. This should be based on more than what you would like it to be. What makes one position's evidence stronger to you than the others? You need to explain this.
Choose one position you agree with the most and explain why you chose that position in one paragraph.

Paragraph 4:

Step 3:
For your final paragraph, you need to address a specific problem with the position you picked in step 2, as follows:
If you chose humans are naturally bad, how can any government be trusted if it consists of humans?
If you chose humans are naturally neutral, does that mean no one is ultimately responsible for their actions because they are just a product of their environment—what about historical figures who stood up to their societies and said something was wrong?
If you chose humans are naturally good, why are laws of any kind necessary?
Address one specific problem with your choice from step 2.

Paragraph 5:

As you understand John Locke. The mind is a tabula rasa (a blank slate) at birth, and we fill it with "ideas" as we encounter the world via the five senses, according to Locke's astounding assertion in his 1689 masterwork. An Essay on Understanding in Humans.

A "blank slate" is what John Locke meant by what?

The notion that the (human) mind is a "blank slate" at birth, empty of any norms for processing data, and also that sensory experiences are the only things that add data and generate processing rules, was known as John Locke's theory of tabula rasa. In Lockean empiricism, it is a crucial element.

Do you think that because only humans have reason, they can also be moral?

Only humans are capable of understanding moral concepts, rules, and values, which is why they are referred to as "The Moral Creature." Humans are the only creature with the ability to develop and communicate ideas, hence humans are the ones that establish what is morally and ethically acceptable.

What is the blank slate's synopsis?

The initial theory, known as the Blank Slate hypothesis, is commonly attributed to seventeenth-century philosopher John Locke. It indicates that there is no such thing as an inherent human nature and that all of the characteristics that make us who we are are the product of things we have acquired over time.

The expression "Manifest Destiny," first used in 1845, refers to the belief that God has predestined the United States to spread democracy and capitalism over all of North America.

The theory underpinned American territorial expansion in the 19th century and served as justification for the eviction of Native Americans and other ethnic groups from their homes. As more states were admitted to the Union as a result of the United States' fast growth, the problem of slavery became more pressing and the Civil War eventually broke out.

The idea of "Manifest Destiny" asserted that everything between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans should be a part of the United States and that it was America's destiny to colonize the whole continent.

Did Britain help the Soviet Union?

By the end of 1941, significant amounts of British Lend-Lease supplies were reaching the Soviet Union and being used there in direct combat with German forces. During this time, the Soviet Union took the military lead from Germany. The Soviets were benefiting from the use of British-made tanks and planes, which caught the attention of both the German soldiers on the ground and their superiors.

The impact of this aid on the fighting on the Eastern Front around the time of the Battle of Moscow is assessed in this article more thoroughly than was possible in the authors' prior works thanks to the use of archival sources and memoirs, many of which have only been made available to researchers in the last decade.

One additional inclusion that could be suggested for the Kennedy Administration's foreign policy efforts to contain communism is the promotion of human rights and democratic values.

While the Kennedy Administration focused on military and political strategies to counter communism, emphasizing flexible response and supporting governments facing communist insurgencies, there was an opportunity to place greater emphasis on promoting human rights as a means to challenge the appeal of communism.

Including a specific commitment to promoting human rights and democratic values in the foreign policy approach would have highlighted the importance of individual freedoms, civil liberties, and democratic governance as fundamental elements in countering the appeal of communism. This would have involved supporting and encouraging countries to uphold human rights standards, advocating for free and fair elections, and working towards inclusive political systems.

By incorporating the promotion of human rights into the containment strategy, the Kennedy Administration could have presented a more comprehensive approach that not only addressed the military and political aspects of communism but also emphasized the importance of individual freedoms and democratic principles. This would have resonated with people living under repressive regimes and could have served as a powerful ideological counterweight to the promises of communism.

Furthermore, promoting human rights aligns with the values and ideals of the United States as a democratic nation and would have demonstrated a commitment to universal principles rather than purely geopolitical considerations.
