Rust is and will gradually destroy metal

Answers

Answer 1
Rust is the common name for a very common compound, iron oxide. ... As the acid is formed and the iron dissolved, some of the water will begin to break down into its component pieces -- hydrogen and oxygen. The free oxygen and dissolved iron bond into iron oxide, in the process freeing electrons.

Rust is the enemy of any iron, steel or galvanized metal you have in your home. It is an eyesore and if not removed or tested properly, rust can eventually destroy the metal it attacks. It can also stain adjacent painted surfaces.

Remember that rust will attack through the smallest scratch or bare spot. It will then undercut the surface until the paint or other finish blisters, cracks and pops off.

Rust can be removed with a wire brush, a rotary wire brush attachment on an electric drill, a hand grinder, electric orbital sander, with commercial chemical compounds, and even with common household preparations.

Remember to wear safety goggles and work gloves when using power tools; wear goggles, protective clothing, and rubber gloves when handling caustic chemicals or solvents such as kerosene or turpentine.

!!! ⬇️

Rust is the common name for a very common compound, iron oxide. Iron oxide, the chemical Fe2O3, is common because iron combines very readily with oxygen -- so readily, in fact, that pure iron is only rarely found in nature. Iron (or steel) rusting is an example of corrosion -- an electrochemical process involving an anode (a piece of metal that readily gives up electrons), an electrolyte (a liquid that helps electrons move) and a cathode (a piece of metal that readily accepts electrons). When a piece of metal corrodes, the electrolyte helps provide oxygen to the anode. As oxygen combines with the metal, electrons are liberated. When they flow through the electrolyte to the cathode, the metal of the anode disappears, swept away by the electrical flow or converted into metal cations in a form such as rust.

For iron to become iron oxide, three things are required: iron, water and oxygen. Here's what happens when the three get together:

When a drop of water hits an iron object, two things begin to happen almost immediately. First, the water, a good electrolyte, combines with carbon dioxide in the air to form a weak carbonic acid, an even better electrolyte. As the acid is formed and the iron dissolved, some of the water will begin to break down into its component pieces -- hydrogen and oxygen. The free oxygen and dissolved iron bond into iron oxide, in the process freeing electrons. The electrons liberated from the anode portion of the iron flow to the cathode, which may be a piece of a metal less electrically reactive than iron, or another point on the piece of iron itself.

The chemical compounds found in liquids like acid rain, seawater and the salt-loaded spray from snow-belt roads make them better electrolytes than pure water, allowing their presence to speed the process of rusting on iron and other forms of corrosion on other metals.

Answers

We can see here that the statement, "The moist adiabatic rate is always less than the dry adiabatic rate, which is about 10°C for every 1000 m of change in height." is false.

What is adiabatic rate?

The adiabatic rate is the rate at which an air parcel's temperature changes as it rises or falls in the atmosphere. The adiabatic rate is different for dry air and moist air. The dry adiabatic rate is about 9.8°C/km (5.4°F per 1000 ft), while the moist adiabatic rate is about 6°C/km (3.3°F per 1000 ft).

When an air parcel rises, it expands and cools adiabatically. This is because the pressure decreases as the air parcel rises, and the temperature of a gas is inversely proportional to its pressure

Answers

Both Adam Smith and Ayn Rand would agree that individuals and businesses are driven by their own self-interests, and society benefits when people pursue their own goals and aspirations rather than sacrificing for the common good.

Adam Smith, known as the father of modern economics, emphasized the concept of self-interest in his book "The Wealth of Nations." He argued that individuals and businesses naturally seek their own personal gain and wealth. Through the pursuit of their self-interests, they engage in productive activities, which ultimately benefit society as a whole. Smith believed that the invisible hand of the market, guided by self-interest, leads to economic prosperity and the overall betterment of society.

Ayn Rand, a prominent advocate of Objectivism, shared a similar viewpoint. She believed that the pursuit of self-interest, rooted in reason and individualism, is essential for human progress and flourishing. According to Rand, when individuals are free to pursue their own personal interests and ambitions, they contribute to innovation, productivity, and the creation of wealth. This, in turn, benefits society through job creation, economic growth, and the provision of goods and services that meet the needs and desires of individuals.

Contrary to the notion of sacrificing for the common good, both Smith and Rand argued that it is through the pursuit of personal interests and the freedom to act in accordance with one's values that society as a whole can thrive. They recognized the power of voluntary exchanges, competition, and the incentives of the free market to drive economic prosperity and improve the well-being of individuals.

The Geiger-Muller counter is an----method of ----- radioactivity that is based on the radioactive particle-----a chamber of-----. The radioactive particles------part of the-----, which can then----across----within the chamber.

Answers

Part A: To find the time it takes for the technetium-99m to decay to 7.8×10⁻⁴ mg, you can use the decay formula:

Final amount = Initial amount × (1/2)^(time / half-life)

Rearrange the formula to solve for time:

time = half-life × log2(Initial amount / Final amount)

Substitute the given values: time = 6.0 hours × log2(0.050 mg / 7.8×10⁻⁴ mg)
time ≈ 25 hours

So, it takes about 25 hours for the technetium-99m to decay to 7.8×10⁻⁴ mg.

2. The Geiger-Muller counter is an instant method of detecting radioactivity that is based on the radioactive particle passing through a chamber of argon gas. The radioactive particles ionize part of the gas, which can then conduct electricity across electrodes within the chamber.

Part A: It would take about 48.7 hours for the radioactive isotope to decay to 7.8×10−4 mg.

2: The current is amplified and counted by the Geiger-Muller counter, which can then detect and measure the level of radioactivity.

Part A: To answer the question, we can use the concept of half-life. The half-life of technetium-99m is about 6.0 hours, which means that after 6.0 hours, half of the original amount of the radioactive isotope would decay. Therefore, if a patient is given 0.050 mg of technetium-99m, and we want to know how long it would take for it to decay to 7.8×10−4 mg, we can use the following formula:

N = N0 * (1/2)^(t/t1/2)

where N is the final amount, N0 is the initial amount, t is the time, and t1/2 is the half-life.

Substituting the given values, we get:

7.8×10−4 mg = 0.050 mg * (1/2)^(t/6.0 hours)

Taking the natural logarithm of both sides and solving for t, we get:

t = 6.0 hours * ln(0.050 mg/7.8×10−4 mg) / ln(2) = 48.7 hours

Therefore, it would take about 48.7 hours for the radioactive isotope to decay to 7.8×10−4 mg.

2 : A Geiger-Muller counter detects radioactivity by ionizing gas molecules in a chamber and measuring the resulting electrical current. The chamber is filled with an inert gas such as argon or neon, and has a wire or metal mesh electrode at the center. When a radioactive particle passes through the chamber, it collides with gas molecules and ionizes them, creating positive ions and free electrons. These ions and electrons can then travel across the chamber and produce a current between the central electrode and an outer metal tube. The current is amplified and counted by the Geiger-Muller counter, which can then detect and measure the level of radioactivity.
