Who is Ogilvy? What does he show the narrator? What do they think they are looking at and what is it really? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.

Answers

Astronomer Ogilvy is mentioned by H.G. Wells in "The Star" as one of the few people who was aware of the enigmatic star-like object that emerged in the night sky.

What is astronomer?

A scientist who examines celestial objects like stars, planets, galaxies, and other astronomical phenomena is known as an astronomer. In order to examine the universe, astronomers utilise large telescopes and sophisticated equipment. They then employ theoretical models to describe what they see.

Through a powerful telescope, Ogilvy reveals to the narrator what they initially think is a star but which is actually a massive metal cylinder drifting in space. They appear to be artificial objects that were sent from somewhere else, he says, according to them.

This section in the book provides evidence in favour of this response: "Ogilvy had one of the telescope's concave mirrors [in his hands] and he was strolling about the pit, staring at the sky... It is a cylinder, although an artificial one, Ogilvy remarked. It is a ship that is coming here.

A risk of the writer's rhetorical strategy in lines 204-209 ("| can think . . . upon earth") is that

Answers

A risk of the writer's rhetorical strategy in lines 204-209 ("| can think . . . upon earth") is that the audience may take offense to the author's direct description of the wealthy Irish as the target. The writer explicitly mentions that his proposal aims to lessen the number of people in the kingdom of Ireland, which may be perceived as offensive or insulting to those who fall into that category. This can alienate and antagonize the audience, causing them to reject or dismiss the writer's argument.

Furthermore, the audience may believe that the writer truly has abandoned the "expedients" he catalogs.

The writer dismisses other potential solutions and claims to offer a unique remedy for Ireland, but this may be seen as disingenuous or lacking credibility. The audience may question the writer's sincerity and doubt the effectiveness or feasibility of the proposed solution.

Additionally, the audience may perceive the writer as mean-spirited and unreliable in his message.

The tone of the passage, particularly the references to taxing absentees, rejecting foreign luxury, and criticizing the behavior of women, can be interpreted as harsh or judgmental.

This can undermine the writer's ethos and make it difficult for the audience to trust or sympathize with his perspective.

Moreover, some individuals may oppose the idea of population control, especially in regard to Catholics. The writer's explicit intention to reduce the number of people in Ireland may clash with religious beliefs or personal values held by the audience.

This can generate strong opposition and resistance to the writer's argument.

Lastly, there is a possibility that some audience members may embrace the enactment of those "expedients" in an attempt to improve the situation.

Despite the potential risks and controversies associated with the writer's rhetorical strategy, there may be individuals who view the proposed measures as necessary or beneficial for the kingdom.

They may be willing to overlook or justify the offensive language and embrace the ideas presented as a means to address the issues at hand.

CELL PHONES IN SCHOOLWho doesn’t have a cell phone these days? The amazing thing about cell phones is that they are no longer just used for calling or texting. They have become an indispensable multi-tool wonder. Today’s cell phone is cutting-edge technology at your fingertips. With this in mind, should students be permittedto use cell phones in school?I believe they should not just be permittedto use cell phones, they should be requiredto use them. Cell phones don’t just allow students to stay connected with family and friends, they arealso an excellent learning resource, and they encourage the responsible use of technology. To begin with, cell phones make it possible for students to stay in touch with family and friends.A student can call home and ask a family member to bring them a forgotten assignment or lunch money or to come pick them up if they are sick. Also, cell phones allow parents to keep track of their children’s whereabouts before, during, and after school. And, of course, there’s always the possibility of a student

needing to contact a parent because ofa dangerous situation. Thus, having a cell phone is like having a guardian angel.  Students can alsoconnect with friends, but not just because it’s a fun thing to do; my teacher asks us to text or email our friends when they are absent to let them know what’s going on in class and to inform them of any homework. When used responsibly, a cell phone can be an excellent communication tool. Also, cell phones–especially smart phones -are a fabulous learning resource. Students can use tools such as the calculator, the map finder, and the calendar. I’ve used my cell phone in Math and Geography and to keep track of my homework. My science teacher lets us use our smartphones to do research when we are doing group work or working on a project. For example, when we were studying ecologywe did research on local jobs having to do with protecting the environment. Plus there are lots of great learning websites–including essay-writing websites–we can use to supplement the learning in class. Cell phones are a quick and easy way to incorporate technology in the

classroom. Finally, cell phones encourage the responsible use of technology.Studentscanlearn when and how to use their cellphones to enhance their learning. They will become more independent in their work and more motivatedto learn. Students like being allowed to make choices, and they understand consequences.  If a student is texting when he/she should be paying attention to the teacher, the teacher shouldtake the cell phone temporarily away. No big deal. Before a test, all cell phones shouldbe placed on the teacher’s desk. Again, no big deal. By allowing the use of cellphones, students will feel like they are beingtreated like responsible young adults, and they will appreciate that. If teachers are patient, understanding, and consistent, studentswill surely become responsible users of technology. In conclusion, people who oppose the use of cell phones in school do it because of the disruptions and distractions cell phones can cause.Butwe must accept that we live in a world of technology and that cell phones are an important and very useful part of that world. What is Hamlet about?

Shakespeare's tragedy, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, commonly abbreviated as Hamlet (/haemlt/), was composed between 1599 and 1601. Shakespeare's longest play, it has 29,551 words. The play, which takes place in Denmark, tells the story of Prince Hamlet seeking retribution from his uncle Claudius, who killed Hamlet's father in order to usurp the kingdom and wed Hamlet's mother.

With a plot that can "apparently endlessly repeat and adapt by others," Hamlet is regarded as one of the "most powerful and influential tragedies in the English language." The play exists in three separate early editions: the First Quarto (Q1, 1603), the Second Quarto (Q2, 1604), and the First Folio (F1, 1623). Each version incorporates phrases and sentences that were absent from the others.

Answers

Answer:

1. rising minimum temperatures.

2. rising sea levels.

3. higher ocean temperatures.

4. an increase in heavy precipitation (heavy rain and hail)

5. shrinking glaciers.

Answer:

1. Climate change affects more than temperature. Warmer water changes the patterns of ocean currents, affecting global weather patterns.

2. Some places will receive more rainfall, which could lead to flooding, while other places will get less, which might mean drought. Tropical storms could be stronger, and a continuing rise in sea level due to melting polar ice might push people out of their homes.

3. Hundreds of plant and animal species have already experienced changes because of climate change. The American pika, for example, is a small mammal that lives in cool mountainous areas in western North America—in fact, it can die when exposed to temperatures warmer than 78˚F. So as the mountain climate heats up, the pika climbs the slopes in search of cooler habitat. But what happens when temperatures at the top become too warm for the pika?

4. Other species will benefit from a warmer world—but in some cases that would be bad news for humans. Because disease-carrying mosquitoes thrive in warm, wet weather, more people could contract illnesses such as malaria as the Earth warms.

5. Destroy earth. The beautiful earth would start to crumble. All the pollutuion creates holes in the atmosphere and casues havoc.

A Big Year
By Bob Kowalski

Would you go to the ends of the earth to see a bird? What if it were a really special bird: one with beautiful feathers, an entrancing call, or a silly dance? What if seeing that one special bird would allow you to win a contest?

If that contest doesn't get you on television or win you any cash prizes, would you still do it? For those who participate in the "Big Year," the honor of beating the previous record is the only reward they get or even want.

A "Big Year" is a year in which a person attempts to see as many different species of birds as possible within a particular region. For most in North America who participate in a "Big Year," this region is the lower 48 American states, plus Alaska, Canada, and a couple of French islands off the Canadian coast.

You may be thinking that looking at birds is silly, but just think about the numbers of the recent record holders and the commitment it takes to get these numbers. One recent "Big Year" winner managed to see 744 birds in one year, missing the record by just one bird. Big Year birders travel by train, plane, boat, car, bicycle, and of course, by foot. They can cover over 150 thousand miles to get numbers of sightings this high. They can also spend a small fortune.

Just to clarify, the birds these contestants are counting are the number that they see in a particular year. You see, the contest is based on an honor system. No pictures or other evidence is required as proof of a sighting. Most birders take great pride in their reputation and their abilities to see or hear and then identify a bird. Usually, important sightings of the rare birds needed to get counts in the 700s are visited by hundreds of birders. It is pretty hard to cheat your way to a record-breaking year, but in general, few are interested in cheating.

This honesty comes from the fact that most people who want to break such a record know the greatest rewards are not necessarily in winning. Such rewards are in being able to commit a year of your life to doing something you love. Rewards are found in seeing amazing, inspiring creatures like the California Condor or the Magnificent Frigate bird. Rewards also come in spending time with people who, like you, want to spend their time looking to the skies and trees for glimpses of emerald, crimson, or cerulean blue feathered jewels.

You don't have to be able to travel a continent to have a big birding experience though. Have a big month. Or a big weekend. Set a personal record, learn to identify the species that live in your part of the world, or try to learn the calls of just two species of birds. You will soon find looking at birds isn't such a strange way to spend your time.

Extra! Extra! Backyard Birding
Many schools, families, and young birders across the country participate in the "Great Backyard Bird Count." While not as long as a "Big Year," the "Great Backyard Bird Count" happens every year. It depends on birders and families across the country to watch feeders and other areas in their yards and count the number of birds they see. Unlike the "Big Year," the goal is not to see who can count the most birds. Instead, participants in this event work together to help bird experts get a good idea of how birds are doing. Participants are given checklists and enter their sightings on a website. Called a "citizen-science" project, this event is open to anyone, requires no travel, and happens every year over one weekend in February.
