Answer 1

Answer:

Here are some examples:

Summers can be very hot and it could be hard on the animals and the people working at the shelter, the workers have to work outside at cleaning up the dirt in the yards and helping animals that can't shelter indoors like horses, etc.

adopting more and volunteering could help because it means less animals to care for and more people to care for them.

quick explanation:
1. idioms are basically phrases that means something different than its literal meaning “spinning tales” which in this case, means making up a story.
2. similes are comparing two unlike things including the words like or as. and “like” in this sentence is what makes this a simile since its comparing nursery rhymes and a wildfire.
3. personification is giving any nonliving thing human traits and in this case, the deadly disease was “grabbing hold” of Europe, which means that the disease basically affected Europe (like a pandemic)

Choose a symbol from Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and explain how its meaning changes.

Answers

Answer:

One symbol from Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is the symbol of the "lynched man." This symbol represents the violence and injustice faced by African Americans during the time period of the novel, specifically in the form of lynchings. At first, the lynched man symbolizes fear and oppression for the characters in the novel, as they witness the hanging of a black man and understand the danger that they are all at risk of facing. However, as the novel progresses and the characters become more aware of their own strength and resilience, the lynched man symbol also becomes a symbol of resistance and defiance. The characters, particularly Cassie and her family, begin to actively fight against the injustices they face, and the lynched man becomes a symbol of their determination to stand up for their rights and dignity. In this way, the meaning of the lynched man symbol shifts from one of fear and oppression to one of strength and empowerment.

It changes from a symbol of hope to a symbol of desperation. It changes from a symbol of freedom to a symbol of captivity.

Weather
Weather, especially thunder, often plays a symbolic role in the book, drawing attention during important scenes and events. For example, it’s raining heavily when the school bus forces the children to jump into a muddy.

Mr. Avery boarded across the street from Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose's house. Besides
making change in the collection plate every Sunday, Mr. Avery sat on the porch every night until
nine o'clock and sneezed. One evening we were privileged to witness a performance by him
which seemed to have been his positively last, for he never did it again so long as we watched.
Jem and I were leaving Miss Rachel's front steps one night when Dill stopped us: "Golly, looka
yonder." He pointed across the street. At first we saw nothing but a kudzu-covered front porch,
but a closer inspection revealed an arc of water descending from the leaves and splashing in the
yellow circle of the street light, some ten feet from source to earth, ensuing contest to determine
relative distances and respective prowess only made me feel left out again, as I was untalented in
this area.

Read the excerpt from "Healthy Eating."

But no one can ignore the damage being wrought by all this bad eating. More than one out of three adults in the United States -- 37.5 percent -- are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some of the leading causes of death -- heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes -- are directly linked to obesity. And childhood obesity has tripled in the last 30 years. With more than a third of kids between 6 and 19 considered obese, the CDC reports, they are at substantially more risk for developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, bone and joint conditions, and cancer.

The author's argument that a poor diet can be harmful to a person's health is

ineffective, because it lacks clear and reasonable evidence.
ineffective, because it leaves the reader with questions.
effective, because it addresses and refutes a counterclaim.
effective, because it includes facts from a credible source.

Sharks' Teeth
By Langston Carter

The day we found the sharks' teeth was foggy and cool. Moisture hung in the air so thick you could almost see it sparkling in the dim sunlight. There were days, early in the summer like this one, where it seemed there was more water in the air than in the bay. We had beached the boat and stepped out on the recently cleared spit of land. The ground had a light dusting of white sand over an under layer of dried black mud. It looked like a recently frosted chocolate cake, though the frosting was spread a bit thin for my taste. The ground was solid, but we knew from experience that it was full of fiddler crab holes, and would be underwater at the first super-high tide. Mysteriously, to us anyway, someone wanted to build a house there.

We often came to these spots to look for artifacts. Our beach, our summer home, had been a fishing camp for as long as anyone living could remember. The oldest stories told of travelers coming down to the edge of the sea, lining up to fill their wagon beds with salted fish to take back home. Old decaying cabins still lined the beach. Rotting nets, hung out to dry in the last century, decorated their weathered walls. Their broken faces spun stories in our minds. The fishermen who, tanned and wrinkled from sun and salt, hauled their nets full of splashing mullet in to cheers from the waiting crowds. The bounty of the sea lightened everyone's hearts, and the smell of roasting fish filled the damp air. Women fanned themselves from wagon seats. Children splashed in the shallow edges of the bay. It was a scene we had acted out as youngsters, building an imaginary bridge to a life we would never fully know.

Read this sentence from the text:

It was a scene we had acted out as youngsters, building an imaginary bridge to a life we would never fully know.

Which of the following best explains the phrase an imaginary bridge to a life?
The characters could never know if their made-up stories were truthful.
The characters had more than one version of the imagined story of the past.
The characters feel the past is too far beyond their young imaginations.
The characters have happy memories of their past childhood.

Answer:Despite technical breakthroughs and scientific discoveries that lead us to assume we have little in common with the rest of the animal world, whether we recognize it or not, we are still a member of the planet's fauna. Needless to mention, when humanity's greatest achievements were the invention of a round wheel or specific agricultural implements, humans were dependent on nature and paid attention to changes in its course (George 24). With the technological revolutions and discoveries that have shaped our previous history, we appear to pay little attention to nature, becoming increasingly estranged from it on a daily basis. However, our ties to nature cannot be severed. There are several important reasons why individuals should aim to engage with nature more than they do now.

Explanation:

Answer:

Despite the technological advances and scientific inventions that make us believe we have nothing in common with the rest of the animal kingdom, we are still part of the planet’s fauna, whether we realize it or not. Needless to say, back when humanity’s main achievements were the invention of a round wheel, or specific tools for farming agriculture, human beings were dependent on nature and paid attention to the changes of its course (George 24). Now, with technological revolutions and discoveries that made up our past history, we seem to pay little attention to nature, getting more and more disconnected from it every day. However, the links we have with nature cannot disappear. There are a number of key reasons in favor of the concept that people should try to connect with nature more than they do today.Nature has historically been the home for human beings, just like it remains a home for animals and plants (with the exception of those that are kept in zoos and greenhouses). Nature is able to show us true beauty without modifications, exaggerations, and falseness. After all, is it not ironic how people go to galleries and exhibitions to look at paintings of colorful flowers, mighty woods, green hills, and fast clear streams; those simple beauties can easily be observed in real life outside of the urban environment which looms around them. Or the fact people purchase recordings of calming sounds of nature, like what you would hear at night in the woods—a damped quavering of an owl, a ringing flare of crickets, and the sonorous rustle of bushes. What we are in fact doing is trying to deceive our minds and make ourselves believe we are in the woods, next to those owls, crickets, and bushes, while we are instead trapped inside our tiny, well-furnished, and packed-with-technology apartment.

Answer:

After a fortnight, it was the second week of April. Lyddie couldn't believe it had already been two weeks. Mistress Cutler felt she had manufactured enough molded sugar and would sell it in Boston. When the mistress left, Triphena persuaded Lyddie to go home for a short holiday and to check on her cabin, despite the fact that they were not permitted to leave.

The next morning, Lyddie left. On her way to see Charlie, she stopped at Baker's Mill. Mrs. Baker, on the other hand, hinted that Charlie was not present because he was at school. Mrs. Baker had not explicitly said that he was at school because she knew Lyddie would be envious. Lyddie envied her brother's ability to attend school. Lyddie was concerned that remaining and waiting for him might embarrass him. So, despite the Bakers' offer to remain for supper and wait, Lyddie chose to continue going towards their cabin.

Lyddie finally arrived at her cottage. But when she walked into the cabin, she noticed a dark, shadowy figure hanging with in faint light. In the faint light, Lyddie saw that his face and hands were unusually black. Only his eyes gleamed brightly. She suddenly realized she was gazing at a black man!

Use the description of the modern fiction series The Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan to complete the activity.

The Heroes of Olympus is a five-book series focusing on teenage demigods who live in modern times and are the children of the ancient Greek and Roman gods. The seven Greek and Roman demigods must work together to leave their home camps in the United States and travel to the ancient lands in Rome and Greece. There, they must battle many enemies, especially the primordial goddess Gia, who wants to destroy the gods and the world as we know it. Once they accomplish this giant task, they return home and improve the demigod world by uniting the Greek and Roman camps in the United States.

In 3–5 sentences, explain the elements from the description that illustrate the common patterns of a hero’s journey.

Answers

Below (paraphrase just in case)

The heroes journey is illustrated in this description through several details. The outline of this trope sees a person responding to a call to action, this being Gia wanting to destroy the world. Then, the next element is a journey from their common surroundings to a "new world", or unfamiliar place, akin to the journey away from their normal camps. Then, another is the status quo, shown in their return home. Here, they attempt to make things better, uniting camps across two nations.
