Unit 1 Assignment - Literary Analysis Essay
Write a Literary Analysis Essay on "The Lord of the Flies"
Follow the assignment instructions and review the rubric:

Select three symbols from Lord of the Flies. You may use either objects or characters. Write a five paragraph paper in which you identify and explain the three symbols.

Format:

2 – 3 pages in length
Typed, double-spaced, 12 point font (if you are submitting a Word document)
MLA format (refer to handout)
Introductory Paragraph: Think of a great hook to open your paper – something that will intrigue the reader and make them want to read it. Identify the author and title of the book. End your paragraph with a thesis statement identifying the three symbols and explaining how they illustrate the theme of the novel.

Body Paragraphs: Use a different body paragraph for each symbol, and discuss these in the same order in which they are listed in the thesis statement. Each paragraph must have a topic sentence in which you make a general statement about what the symbol represents. The topic sentence is followed by a lead-off sentence in which you introduce a specific detail or example that illustrates how this is true. Next, add at least one embedded quote giving additional information about the lead-off sentence. Next add a couple of sentences to explain how the detail or example relates to the main thesis. The last sentence is the clincher, which restates the main point of the paragraph. Use a transition to take readers to the body paragraph topic sentences and then on to the conclusion.

Concluding Paragraph: This paragraph should restate your thesis statement but in different wording. You should mention again the title and author of the work. Also, give your ideas about the use of these symbols, what Golding may have been warning society about, or his message.

Additional Requirements:

Use third person (no I, we, us, you).
MLA format

Submitting your work:
Click on the "Add Submission" button to upload your document. PDF is the preferred file format (choose 'save as' from the file menu and change the file format to PDF). Alternatively, you can use the text box on the submission page to recreate the worksheet. Click on the first button in the toolbar to access all the formatting tools.

Review the 'submitting your assignment' document we provided at the beginning of the course for more details about citing your sources, and for other useful tips too.

Answers

The ludlow massacre was a tragic confrontation between Colorado mine workers and militia.

Since September 13, 1913, some 10,000 miners working for the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) have gone on strike in protest of the deplorable pay and working conditions in Colorado's coalfields. Striking miners built tent communities, the largest of which housed roughly 1,200 strikers, in Ludlow after being evicted from the company towns by the managers of industrialist John D. Rockefeller's Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. There were many different ethnic groups among the striking miners, including a sizable number of Greeks and Italians.

The armed strikers and the investigators hired by the firm clashed frequently. By accompanying strikebreakers to the mines and ignoring the aggressive behavior of the detectives, the Colorado National Guard, which had been sent in to lessen the level of violence, favored the operators.

Slide 4: Freedom to Lie: The Court's Opinion 1. What were the four main points of the plurality opinion written by Justice Kennedy?

Answers

In the case of United States v. Alvarez (2012), the Supreme Court considered whether the Stolen Valor Act, which criminalized false claims of military honors, violated the First Amendment's protection of free speech. The Court held that the Act was unconstitutional, and Justice Kennedy wrote the plurality opinion, which included four main points:

1. False statements of fact are not always unprotected speech: Justice Kennedy argued that not all false statements of fact are unprotected speech. While some categories of false statements, such as perjury or fraud, may be subject to criminal penalties, false statements in other contexts may be protected by the First Amendment.

2. The Stolen Valor Act restricts core political speech: Justice Kennedy argued that the Stolen Valor Act restricts core political speech, which is entitled to the highest level of First Amendment protection. False claims of military honors may be seen as a form of political expression, and the government should not be able to criminalize such speech unless it can show a compelling interest in doing so.

3. The government's interest in protecting the integrity of military honors is not compelling: Justice Kennedy argued that the government's interest in protecting the integrity of military honors was not compelling enough to justify the restriction on free speech. While the government has an interest in preventing fraud and deception, it can pursue that interest through less restrictive means.

Explain what Rich Gibson’s quote is trying to communicate. Address the underlined words in your response, and connect the main theme of the quote to something we've studied this semester.

“Life travels upward in spirals.

Those who take pains to search the shadows of the past below us,

Then, can better judge the tiny arc up which they climb,

More surely guess the dim curves of the future above them.”

Answers

Answer:

Rich Gibson's quote is trying to communicate that life is a journey that involves both progress and setbacks. The phrase "life travels upward in spirals" suggests that we may experience ups and downs as we move forward, but ultimately we are headed in an upward direction. The underlined words "search the shadows of the past" and "tiny arc up which they climb" imply that it is important to learn from our past experiences in order to better understand our present situation and make informed decisions about the future. This connects to the main theme of the quote, which is the importance of understanding and learning from history in order to navigate the present and shape the future. This theme is similar to the concept of historical consciousness, which involves being aware of the past and its influence on the present, and using this knowledge to inform our actions and decisions.

What was the longest lasting, negative result of the Yazoo Land Fraud for Georgia?

Answers

Answer: Georgia was too weak after the Revolution to defend its vast western land claims, called the "Yazoo lands" after the river that flowed through the westernmost part. Consequently, the legislature listened eagerly to proposals from speculators willing to pay for the right to form settlements there. In the 1780s the state supported two unsuccessful speculative projects to establish counties in the western territory and in 1788 tried, again without success, to cede a portion of those lands to Congress. In 1789 the legislature sold about 25 million acres to three companies, only to torpedo the sale six months later by insisting that payment be made in gold and silver rather than in depreciated paper currency. Pressure to act continued to build on legislators until, by mid-November 1794, a majority reportedly favored the sale of the western territory. On January 7, 1795, Georgia governor George Mathews signed the Yazoo Act, which transferred 35 million acres in present-day Alabama and Mississippi to four companies for $500,000. To achieve this successful sale, the leader of the Yazooists, Georgia's Federalist U.S. senator James Gunn, had arranged the distribution of money and Yazoo land to legislators, state officials, newspaper editors, and other influential Georgians. Cries of bribery and corruption accompanied the Yazoo Act as it made its way to final passage. Angry Georgians protested the sale in petitions and street demonstrations. Despite the swelling opposition, the Yazoo companies completed their purchases.
