In this respect, they are just like the great statesmen, or scientific men, or military men. It is because they are thus selected that wealth—both their own and that entrusted to them—aggregates under their hands. . . . In contrast to poetry, prose is a type of literature that is written in sentences and paragraphs.

I read the short tale "Yellow Woman" by Leslie Marmon Silko as an illustration of this genre. The trip of a young Pueblo woman who is lured away from her village by the enigmatic and attractive "Yellow Man" is the subject of this tale.

My interest was immediately piqued by Silko's story since it establishes a strong sense of place and exposes the rich culture of the Pueblo people. I found it fascinating how the protagonist's physical journey, which took her out of her familiar surroundings and into the unfamiliar, paralleled her emotional journey.

This experience has confirmed for me the value of choosing one's own route in life, even if it deviates from what society expects. I have some concerns about how to find a balance between tradition and individual freedom in light of the story.

I also wonder how using one's own experiences might help to question and ultimately change cultural conventions. The power relationships between men and women as well as the idea of cultural appropriation are important concerns that this story brought to my attention.

The Yellow Woman is depicted as a weak and naïve persona, whereas the Yellow Man is presented as a mysterious and strong figure. This narrative resonates with me because it emphasizes the value of telling one's own story and choosing one's own route.

Which event from The Odyssey best highlights the idea that the acient greeks greatly disliked greediness?

Answers

The event in "The Odyssey" that demonstrates the ancient Greeks' strong disliking of greediness is- when Odysseus' crew opens the bag of winds given to him by Aeolus. That bag holds all the winds except the advantageous west wind, which could have guaranteed their safe return home.

Inquisitiveness and greed lead the crew to open the bag, unleashing the tempestuous winds that propel them off course. This incident emphasizes the Greeks' view that succumbing to greediness and transgressing heavenly gifts or prophecies will cause some deadly outcomes and disrupt the natural order.

In conclusion, it can be said that the Greeks valued discipline, self-restraint, and the quest of noble objectives over instantaneous indulgence.

Was Pierre Aronnax a Christian?

Answers

Answer:

It is unclear whether Pierre Aronnax, the protagonist of Jules Verne's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," was a Christian. There is little mention of religion in the novel, and Aronnax's beliefs are never explicitly stated. However, it is worth noting that in the 19th century, when the novel was written, most people in Western Europe and North America identified as Christian, so it is possible that Aronnax was as well. Without more evidence, though, it is impossible to say for certain.

Sorry

Explanation:

In America, many are comfortable describing ethics as follows: “Well, what’s right for me is right for me", and "what’s right for you is right for you". Let’s just agree to disagree.” This is an affirmation of what philosophers call individual or subjective moral relativism. In this understanding of relativism, morality is a matter of individual feelings and personal preferences. In individual moral relativism, the determination of what is right and wrong in a situation varies according to the individual. Moral relativists do not believe in natural law or universal truths. Cultural moral relativism puts culture at the forefront of relative ethical decision-making. It says the individual must include the precepts of his or her culture as a prominent part of the relativistic moral action. Adultery is prevalent throughout the world. Although the vast majority of people around the world still consider adultery to be morally repugnant and simply immoral, society's cultural rejection may not be enough to prevent it from growing in popularity because individual sexual decisions are more likely to trump moral objections of adultery.

Sakow, a town about 515km (320 miles) southwest of the capital Mogadishu, is in an area entirely under Al-Shabaab’s control. Members of Al-Shabaab have in the past handed out harsh punishments for religious infractions including hacking off of limbs for alleged thieves and public executions.

Isak, age thirty, lived with her legal husband and children in Hagar village in Jubba but cheated on her husband after she told him she was traveling to Mogadishu to visit her relatives, subsequently, her husband Abdallah found out his wife did not go to Mogadishu but instead was having an affair with a man named Ali. Isak admitted that she had the affair, and was pregnant by the man. Her legal husband Abdallah brought the case to court eight days after she gave birth to her daughter. She was found guilty and was scheduled to be stoned soon after her daughter was weaned. But her partner, who was single and also from Sri Lanka, was given a punishment of 100 lashes after being found guilty of the same offense. According to the Islamic Sharia, Isak was publicly stoned to death a year later, typically ONLY women are sentenced to death by stoning for committing acts of adultery.

Critical Thinking

1.After a brief discussion on the narrative define and explain ethical subjectivism, individual moral relativism, and cultural moral relativism in detail, noting how they differ from each other, and their strengths and weaknesses. Do Not Just Cut and Paste the terms but explain them in your own words.

2.What moral judgment can you apply to adultery?

3.Is adultery morally wrong if two consenting adults agree to commit adultery?
Morally, should the United States, like other countries, enforce adultery laws? "Adultery is still illegal in the United States and is classified as a Class B Misdemeanor felony with a maximum penalty of up to three months in jail and a $500 fine".

Answers

1. Ethical Subjectivism: Ethical Subjectivism is a philosophy that claims ethical truths are subjective. They are rooted in individual emotions and beliefs and cannot be generalized as moral facts. Therefore, moral judgments can vary from one person to another. Individual moral relativism: Individual moral relativism is a view that claims moral beliefs and values vary between people. This view suggests that moral standards depend on an individual's preference and not on a universal set of moral laws. Cultural Moral Relativism: Cultural moral relativism claims that the cultural context determines moral judgments. This means that what is considered moral in one culture may not be in another culture.

2. Morally, adultery is generally considered morally wrong because it violates trust and fidelity that is supposed to be maintained between two people in a committed relationship. It is an act of betrayal that can lead to the breakup of relationships and families.

3. Adultery can be considered morally wrong, even if two consenting adults agree to commit adultery. It is because adultery violates the trust and the commitment between two people in a committed relationship. If someone decides to enter into a committed relationship, they have made a commitment to be faithful to their partner. By committing adultery, they are breaking that commitment and violating the trust that their partner has placed in them. In this sense, adultery is still considered morally wrong because it is an act of betrayal.

Morally, enforcing adultery laws can be controversial because it raises concerns about privacy and individual freedom. While adultery can cause harm to the people involved, it is ultimately a private matter that should be dealt with within the confines of the relationship. However, in some cases, adultery may have legal consequences if it leads to issues such as divorce, child custody, or property disputes. As such, it is up to individual countries to decide whether or not to enforce adultery laws based on their cultural, social, and legal norms.

Read the excerpt from Emani's argumentative essay.

If someone wants to learn a new skill or trade, there is
media online to provide instruction. With the
advancements in technology, everyone will be trained
through video. People can even learn how to perform
medical procedures online. As soon as everyone shares
their knowledge online, formal education will no longer be
necessary.

Why does the author present a faulty analogy in the
excerpt?

O to explain the need for online videos
to list the process for learning a new skill
O to describe technology advancements
O to prove the value of skills obtained online

Answers

First, let's define what an analogy is.

An analogy is comparing two things. For example, cat is to lion as dog is to wolf. These two comparisons have a pattern. The cat is smaller then a lion but they are both felines. The dog is smaller than a wolf but they are both canines

A faulty analogy is a type of logical fallacy that uses an analogy incorrectly. It compares two things that may seem like they can be compared, but in reality, the comparison is illogical and/or incorrect.

In the paragraph, the faulty analogy is bolded:

If someone wants to learn a new skill or trade, there is

media online to provide instruction. With the

advancements in technology, everyone will be trained

through video. People can even learn how to perform

medical procedures online. As soon as everyone shares

their knowledge online, formal education will no longer be

necessary.

People can use media to provide instructions for a new skill or trade, but it can not be used to teach how to perform medical procedures. This skill needs hands-on and personal instruction.

Let's go through the options:

to explain the need for online videos

The passage essentially states that many things can be learned through the use of online videos and that they are important to society. It mentions medical skills, which is highly valued and needed in our world. This may be the answer, but let's analyze the other choices.

to list the process for learning a new skill

There are no list or "how-tos" or instructions in this passage, so this can not be the answer

to describe technology advancements

There are no specific details as to what advancements are made, so this does not relate to the passage.

to prove the value of skills obtained online

The paragraph does not discount skills learned offline nor does it state that skills learned online are more important or valuable.

The best answer choice seems to be A) To explain the need for online videos

The author present a faulty analogy in the excerpt  to prove the value of skills obtained online. Therefore, the correct answer is Option A.

An analogy is a comparison between two things that are often different in some aspects but share similarities in others. Analogies are used to  explain complex or unfamiliar concepts by relating them to more familiar concepts. For example "Life is like a journey." In this analogy, the concept of life is compared to a journey, suggesting that both involve progress, challenges, and different stages. Whereas, A faulty analogy, on the other hand, is an analogy that fails to provide a valid comparison between the two things being compared, often due to significant differences that outweigh the similarities.

The author presents a faulty analogy in the excerpt because of the statement: "People can even learn how to perform medical procedures online." This is a faulty analogy because learning medical procedures is not equivalent to learning most other skills. Medical procedures typically require hands-on experience, practical training, and supervised practice, which cannot be adequately replicated through online videos alone. Therefore, the analogy between learning medical procedures online and other skills/trades is not accurate, making it a faulty analogy.

Sarah Forbes talks about how she gets a good night's sleep
I can't remember when I started to have problems sleeping. As a student I seemed
to spend half of my life sleeping. But after my graduation I found myself spending hours
lying awake until the early hours of the morning. After a few weeks of this I decided to
do something about it. I often went to bed at different times; perhaps there was a
programme on TV I wanted to watch, or I'd be watching videos on my phone. So I tried
going to bed at the same time each night. This took a while to get used to but slowly I
found myself getting into a regular routine.
I also took the advice of a friend and made sure I did things to help me relax before
I went to bed. I'd start by writing a list of things I needed to do the next day so I wouldn’t
end up thinking about them during the night. I got into the habit of having a nice warm
bath before bedtime and then did some relaxation exercises like meditation. Reading
also seemed to work, but not in the way I expected. I would sometimes just fall asleep
in the middle of a chapter!

I also found some suggestions online about how to make your bedroom sleep-
friendly. I used to have very thin curtains that let the light from outside shine through,

so I changed these for thicker ones. I also removed all technology from the room like
the TV and the laptop as these are not supposed to help you sleep, even if they are
switched off. And of course I left the mobile phone downstairs!
And the result? I'm pleased to say ifs worked. Of course, there are some nights
where I find it difficult to go to sleep but mostly I'm getting a good seven hours· sleep a
night. I started to make a note of my sleep patterns, and this is also useful as it helps
show things that were making me lie awake, like problems at work. So, I have to say it
has been a very successful experiment.

•Review the definitions and examples of rhetorical devices from the Nonfiction: Introduction lesson.
•Download this graphic organizer J. The organizer contains one row each for ethos, logos, pathos, and two other devices of your choice.
•Keep track of the rhetorical devices that you find in the nonfiction selections by Pericles, Hannah More, Empress Theodora, Mary Wollstonecraft, Augustine, and C.S. Lewis (six texts in total).
•For each work of nonfiction, choose at least three examples of rhetorical devices. That means you will need three examples × six
nonfiction texts = eighteen examples in total.
• Make sure to copy the examples into the appropriate rows on the chart.
For example, for the Hannah More selection, you may find two separate examples of logos and one example of pathos. You would copy the logos examples into two of the cells in the "Logos" row of the chart; then, you would copy the pathos example into a cell in the "Pathos" row of the chart.
•For each example, include the relevant quote + a brief explanation of how the rhetorical device appears in that quote + the author's name.

"A Noiseless Patient Spider" by Walt Whitman does not follow a specific rhythmical pattern, follows a specific rhyme scheme, and uses the sound devices of alliteration and assonance. These elements contribute to the unique structure and auditory qualities of the poem.

In the poem "A Noiseless Patient Spider" by Walt Whitman, the three descriptions that apply to this poem are: does not follow a specific rhythmical pattern, follows a specific rhyme scheme, and uses the sound devices of alliteration and assonance.

Firstly, the poem does not follow a specific rhythmical pattern. This means that it does not adhere to a consistent metrical structure or regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. Instead, the lines of the poem have varying lengths and rhythms, which gives it a more free-flowing and organic feel.

Secondly, the poem follows a specific rhyme scheme. A rhyme scheme refers to the pattern of rhyming words at the end of each line. In "A Noiseless Patient Spider," the rhyme scheme is AABB, meaning that the second and fourth lines of each stanza rhyme. This consistent pattern of end rhymes adds a sense of musicality and structure to the poem.

Lastly, the poem uses the sound devices of alliteration and assonance. Alliteration is the repetition of initial consonant sounds, while assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds within words. Throughout the poem, Whitman employs these sound devices to create a pleasing auditory effect. For example, in the line "till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul," the repetition of the "s" sound in "gossamer" and "soul" creates an alliterative effect, enhancing the musicality of the poem.
