Answer:

Explanation:

The outbreak of war in Europe in September 1939 posed a serious challenge to U.S. neutrality, since Americans' sympathies lay overwhelmingly with Great Britain and its allies. The task of remaining neutral became even more formidable in mid-1940, when it appeared as though Hitler's Germany might actually win the war. Public sentiment overwhelmingly favored staying out of the war, yet at the same time most Americans believed that a German victory would pose a threat to national security.

Through a study of contemporary documents, students learn about the difficult choices faced by the Roosevelt administration during the first fifteen months of World War II, culminating in the decision to provide direct military aid to Great Britain.

Guiding Questions

Answer:

B. He wanted to support the Allies but maintained a policy of neutrality because of pressure from isolationists.

Explanation:

President Roosevelt did in fact had the mindset of joining World War II, especially with pressures from Great Britain, which had become the sole European country to continue to stave off the aggressive tide of the Nazi blitzkrieg. However, due to public resentment of joining a war that had no real influence against the United States, they (particularly the isolationists), called for the United States to continue to be neutral country.

Roosevelt did, however, work towards providing the Lend-Lease program to allied nations including but not limited to the USSR and Great Britain, and even with its inclusion into all-out war, continued to supply much needed war material to all allies.

as late as 1880, most large western cities counted more women than men. T/F

Answers

False.

During the late 19th century, most large western cities in the United States had a higher population of men than women. This demographic imbalance was primarily due to factors such as the rapid industrialization and urbanization that attracted large numbers of male workers, the predominance of male-dominated industries like mining and railroads, and the westward migration of young single men seeking economic opportunities.

The scarcity of women in these cities resulted in unique social dynamics and challenges, including a gender imbalance and the formation of male-dominated communities. Therefore, the statement that most large western cities had more women than men as late as 1880 is not accurate.

What was Mao's ideology for China?

Answers

Answer:

The founding father of the People’s Republic of China, Mao’s thoughts on achieving a socialist revolution differed philosophically from Marxism-Leninism in some aspects.

While Marxist-Leninist communists believed that workers should form the backbone of the revolution to overthrow the bourgeoisie in industrialised cities, Mao promoted a revolution in China led by peasants – starting in rural areas before gradually besieging the cities. He referred to this as “surrounding the cities from the countryside”.

Another influential theory espoused by Mao was that revolution against capitalists should be won by violence and mass support, famously saying that “political power grows out from the barrel of a gun”.

Mao’s theory that class struggles are permanent – known as his Continuous Revolution Theory – saw him even turn against Communist Party leaders at various points. The Continuous Revolution Theory is often associated with the Great Leap Forward of 1958-62 and the Cultural Revolution of 1966-76, which collectively resulted in the deaths of millions of people.

His ideology is officially enshrined as Mao Zedong Thought and informally known as Maoism.

How was Massachusetts Bay Colony simultaneously theocratic, democratic, oligarchic, and authoritarian?

Answers

Answer:

The Massachusetts Bay Colony government was able to be, at least partially, simultaneously theocratic, democratic, oligarchic, and authoritarian. It was able to be partly theocratic because of the doctrine of the covenant, which stated that the whole purpose of government was to enforce God’s laws. God’s laws applied to everyone, even nonbelievers. Everyone also had to pay taxes for the government-supported church. This meant that religious leaders held enormous power in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

They were able to effectively control who was admitted to the church by conducting public interrogations of people who claimed to have experienced conversion. The last reason it was partially theocratic was one of the main governors, John Winthrop, believed he had a “calling” from God to lead the Massachusetts colony. The Massachusetts Bay Colony was partially democratic for a couple of reasons. First, the freemen elected the governor and his associates each year. The freemen also voted for a representative assembly called the General Court. The Colony was also partly an oligarchy.

It was an oligarchy because only Puritans could be freemen and were eligible to vote. Puritans were even more limited because religious leaders could control who was admitted into the church. Finally, the Massachusetts Bay Colony was partially authoritarian. This was partially because many of the residents were Puritans. Puritans shared in the “Protestant Ethic”, which involved serious commitment to work and to engagement in worldly pursuits. Everyone was held to these standards because of this. Everyone was expected to do this, even if they weren’t Puritan.
