These are indications of Green Tobacco Sickness, which can occur when a person handles tobacco leaves and nicotine is absorbed into the skin. The children also reported working long hours, often in extremely hot conditions, which can be dangerous. They said that they were not given overtime pay or sufficient breaks. In addition, the children and they donned no, or inadequate, protective gear.
U.S. law puts limits on labor performed by minors (children under age 18). But these restrictions vary by industry.

With a parent's permission, children as young as 12 can be hired for unlimited hours outside of school hours on a farm of any size. There's no minimum age for children to work on small farms.
