Which sentence from the passage best supports this inference?

from Frankenstein
by Mary Shelley

It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils. With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet. It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs.
How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavored to form? His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful! Great God! His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same color as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shriveled complexion and straight black lips.
The different accidents of life are not so changeable as the feelings of human nature. I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body. For this, I had deprived myself of rest and health. I had desired it with an ardor that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart. Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room and continued a long time traversing my bed-chamber, unable to compose my mind to sleep. At length, lassitude succeeded to the tumult I had before endured, and I threw myself on the bed in my clothes, endeavouring to seek a few moments of forgetfulness. But it was in vain; I slept, indeed, but I was disturbed by the wildest dreams. I thought I saw Elizabeth, in the bloom of health, walking in the streets of Ingolstadt. Delighted and surprised, I embraced her, but as I imprinted the first kiss on her lips, they became livid with the hue of death; her features appeared to change, and I thought that I held the corpse of my dead mother in my arms; a shroud enveloped her form, and I saw the grave-worms crawling in the folds of the flannel. I started from my sleep with horror; a cold dew covered my forehead, my teeth chattered, and every limb became convulsed; when, by the dim and yellow light of the moon, as it forced its way through the window shutters, I beheld the wretch—the miserable monster whom I had created. He held up the curtain of the bed; and his eyes, if eyes they may be called, were fixed on me. His jaws opened, and he muttered some inarticulate sounds, while a grin wrinkled his cheeks. He might have spoken, but I did not hear; one hand was stretched out, seemingly to detain me, but I escaped and rushed downstairs. I took refuge in the courtyard belonging to the house which I inhabited, where I remained during the rest of the night, walking up and down in the greatest agitation, listening attentively, catching and fearing each sound as if it were to announce the approach of the demoniacal corpse to which I had so miserably given life.
Oh! No mortal could support the horror of that countenance. A mummy again endued with animation could not be so hideous as that wretch. I had gazed on him while unfinished; he was ugly then, but when those muscles and joints were rendered capable of motion, it became a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived.
I passed the night wretchedly. Sometimes my pulse beat so quickly and hardly that I felt the palpitation of every artery; at others, I nearly sank to the ground through languor and extreme weakness. Mingled with this horror, I felt the bitterness of disappointment; dreams that had been my food and pleasant rest for so long space have now become a hell to me; and the change was so rapid, the overthrow so complete!
Morning, dismal and wet, at length, dawned and discovered to my sleepless and aching eyes the church of Ingolstadt, its white steeple and clock, which indicated the sixth hour. The porter opened the gates of the court, which had that night been my asylum, and I issued into the streets, pacing them with quick steps as if I sought to avoid the wretch whom I feared every turning of the street would present to my view. I did not dare return to the apartment which I inhabited but felt impelled to hurry on, although drenched by the rain which poured from a black and comfortless sky.

Lincoln believed that people could take pride in sacrificing for a greater cause, he considered boosting morale important, and "primed" means mentally prepared for a particular outcome.

4. People who suffer tragedy can take consolation and pride in having made sacrifices to a greater cause," best describes Lincoln's central idea in Passage 1. The correct option is A.

What was Lincoln's main idea?

Equal rights and opportunities were what Lincoln understood by American democracy. Nonetheless, he established a distinction between fundamental natural rights like freedom from slavery and political and civil rights like voting.

Who should exercise these rights, in his opinion, should be left up to the states.

This idea is in line with Lincoln's often-expressed belief that the sacrifices made by soldiers during the Civil War were necessary to preserve the Union and ensure that future generations would enjoy the benefits of a united and free country.

He frequently spoke of the valor and dedication of those who had given their lives in service to this cause and saw their sacrifice as a testament to the enduring values and principles of the American nation.

Thus, the ideal selection is option A.

5. The letter reveals how important Lincoln considered it to boost morale among the population during war. Passage 1 describes Lincoln's decision to write a letter of condolence to a mother who lost her five sons in the Civil War.

This act demonstrates Lincoln's deep concern for the ordinary citizens who were sacrificing so much in the war, and his recognition of the importance of boosting morale among the population.

It shows that Lincoln believed that his responsibilities as a leader extended beyond just leading the army and making strategic decisions, but also included providing emotional support and encouragement to the people he was leading.

This aligns with Lincoln's reputation as a compassionate and empathetic leader who was able to inspire and rally his fellow Americans even in the darkest of times.

Thus, the ideal selection is option D

6. "Prepared" is the word in Passage 2 that has a denotative meaning similar to "primed." In this context, "primed" means that he had mentally prepared himself for a particular outcome or situation, and "prepared" has a similar meaning in that he had made certain plans and was ready for a particular scenario,

but was ultimately disappointed when it did not come to fruition.

Thus, the ideal selection is option C.

"Show, don't tell"

Compose a sentence or two which implies the following settings without explicitly stating what the setting is.

Cold, winter night
Noisy restaurant

Here's what I've got:

"My family and I are going out to dinner. When we get to the restaurant, I step out of the vehicle and into a snowbank. Snow falls into my boot. My foot is freezing as we enter the restaurant. We sit down and I remove my jacket. I feel a rush of relief as my body quickly warms up. The waiter attempts to take our order, but we can barely hear him."

Answers

We can compose a sentence or two implying the setting "cold, winter night, noisy restaurant" by describing the environment in which the characters are.

"Do you think it'll snow?" she asked me, practically yelling as I struggled to hear her voice among the many others in the restaurant. I looked out the window, saw only the dark sky and the empty street, and wondered why we had chosen that place for our anniversary dinner when a toddler began to cry right behind me.

What is setting?

In its most basic definition, the setting of a story is the time and the place in which the story happens. For this question, we are supposed to write a sentence or two that imply a setting instead of explicitly stating what it is. Our setting is the following:

Cold, winter nightNoisy restaurant

We can write our sentences by focusing on describing the environment. For example, by saying that the sky is dark, we imply is it nighttime. By mentioning snow, we imply it is winter and cold. By saying a character is yelling to be heard, we imply a noisy place.

Thus, the following sentences seem suitable to answer this question:

"Do you think it'll snow?" she asked me, practically yelling as I struggled to hear her voice among the many others in the restaurant. I looked out the window, saw only the dark sky and the empty street, and wondered why we had chosen that place for our anniversary dinner when a toddler began to cry right behind me.
