How does settler colonialism attempt to erase the lives and histories of people whose lands were taken?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

We can begin by defining settler-colonialism as it relates specifically to Indigenous peoples of North America. The goal of settler-colonization is the removal and erasure of Indigenous peoples in order to take the land for use by settlers in perpetuity. According to Laura Hurwitz and Shawn Borque’s “Settler Colonialism Primer,” “This means that settler colonialism is not just a vicious thing of the past, such as the gold rush, but exists as long as settlers are living on appropriated land and thus exists today.”

Explanation:

Historically, the settler-colonial agenda involved committing genocide by murdering Indigenous peoples (see Manifest Destiny, the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 and the Wounded Knee siege of 1970, the Sand Creek Massacre, King Philip’s War and countless other conflicts). That agenda also meant stealing land through treaties that were later broken or ignored (see the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie and the history of the Lakota and the unceded Black Hills). Students should understand that the United States couldn’t exist without its settler-colonial foundation.

Today, settler-colonialism plays out in the erasure of Indigenous presence. American schools do not teach about Native Americans, past or present; when they do, information is often wrong or incomplete. Students are rarely taught about contemporary Native peoples who have survived the settler-colonial process and continue to thrive, create, practice their traditions and live modern lives.

why did africans have less to fear from nomadic raiders than many other civilizations in the old world web?

Answers

The combination of Africa's geography, diverse societies, local defense systems, and relative isolation from major trade routes made it a less appealing target for nomadic raiders than many other civilizations in the Old World.

Africans had less to fear from nomadic raiders than many other civilizations in the Old World because of several factors that made the African continent less accessible and attractive to these raiders.
Firstly, Africa's vast size and diverse geography made it difficult for nomadic raiders to effectively penetrate and navigate the continent. The Sahara Desert, for example, acted as a natural barrier that limited the movement and effectiveness of raiders from the north, while dense forests and swamplands in other regions further hindered their advances.
Secondly, the African continent's vast array of distinct ethnic and cultural groups made it difficult for raiders to establish a foothold in the region. With so many different societies, languages, and customs, the lack of a unified front made it more challenging for raiders to gain significant control over large territories or exploit divisions between local communities.
Thirdly, African societies developed their own strong defense mechanisms against potential threats, such as walled cities and military forces. These local defenses made it more difficult for raiders to successfully conquer and plunder African communities.
Lastly, Africa's relative isolation from major trade routes compared to other civilizations like those in Europe and Asia made it a less attractive target for nomadic raiders. Without the lure of lucrative trade routes and resources to exploit, raiders were less likely to focus their efforts on the African continent.

This or that? Which 20th century event took place more recently?

Answers

The two major 20th century events that I will compare are World War II (WWII) and the Fall of the Berlin Wall. World War II, a global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945, involved many of the world's nations and resulted in significant changes to the global landscape.

In contrast, the Fall of the Berlin Wall occurred in 1989, marking the end of the Cold War and symbolizing the reunification of Germany. Between these two events, the Fall of the Berlin Wall took place more recently. It was a crucial turning point that led to the end of the Communist era in Eastern Europe and paved the way for the eventual dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The demolition of the wall signified the triumph of democracy over communism and allowed for greater freedom and cooperation among European countries.

In conclusion, the Fall of the Berlin Wall is the more recent major 20th century event when compared to World War II. The wall's collapse marked a new chapter in global politics and represented a significant step towards a more interconnected and peaceful world.

Answers

The factor that most directly affects the amount of money borrowers must repay to lenders is (D) the annual percentage rate (APR).

The APR represents the total cost of borrowing, including the interest rate and any fees or charges associated with the loan.

It is the percentage of the loan amount that borrowers must pay back to the lender on an annual basis.

A higher APR means that borrowers will have to pay back more money over the life of the loan, while a lower APR means that they will pay back less.

While the other factors mentioned - currency exchange rate, unemployment rate, and inflation rate - can indirectly impact borrowing costs, the APR is the most direct and significant factor.

British Indian raids on western frontier settlements in the newly formed United States occurred after the Revolutionary War.

What is the Revolutionary War?

Growing hostilities between citizens of Great Britain's 13 North American colonies and the colonial government, which represented the British crown, led to the Revolutionary War (1775–83), also known as the American Revolution.

The armed conflict began in Lexington and Concord in April 1775 with skirmishes between British troops and colonial militiamen; by the summer, the rebels were waging a full-fledged war for their independence. The American Revolution became a global conflict in 1778 when France sided with the colonists, turning what had essentially been a domestic conflict into one.

Even though the fighting did not officially end until 1783, the Americans had already gained their independence when French assistance allowed the Continental Army to force the British to surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781.

at the lowest point of the great depression, what percentage of u.s. banks were out of business?

Answers

At the lowest point of the Great Depression, approximately 40% of U.S. banks were out of business.

This staggering figure illustrates the severe economic crisis and financial collapse that plagued the United States during the 1930s.

The Great Depression, which began with the stock market crash of 1929, caused widespread unemployment, poverty, and a collapse in industrial production. The banking system was particularly hard-hit as panicked depositors rushed to withdraw their savings, leading to bank failures and a loss of public confidence in the financial system. The lack of effective government regulations and safeguards further exacerbated the crisis, as many banks were unable to weather the economic storm and were forced to close their doors.

The large number of bank failures had a devastating impact on individuals and businesses, as their savings and access to credit were wiped out. It also contributed to a vicious cycle of economic decline, as the lack of available credit hindered investment and further deepened the economic downturn. The high percentage of banks that went out of business reflects the magnitude of the crisis and the urgent need for government intervention and reform to stabilize the financial sector and revive the economy.

Read the article, "This Map Shows the Scale of the 16th- and 17th-Century Scottish Witch Trials" located in the module resources. When reviewing this article, you may consult the map or the text. As you examine the article, find stories, details, and words that stand out as topics of diversity.

How does your peers' understanding of the article inform your understanding of seeing the same historical moment from more than one perspective?

While reading this article, the diversity-related word that stood out to me was ‘woman.’ When looking at an account of a historical event, it is important to consider what perspective of the event we are hearing. Historically, women’s voices have been marginalized and I’m sure that if a woman’s perspective of these events was recorded, we would have had a much different history. Diversity is what makes people unique and instead of celebrating these unique women, they were called witches and murdered. Sadly, these women were not witches, they were mothers, sisters, friends, and wives. Because these women did not fit the societal standard of what a woman should be at the time, they were persecuted and tortured to death. In the case of Isobel Young, whose husband claimed "that his wife had attempted "to kill him with magic after quarreling about an unsavory house guest." it sounds like she just didn’t take her husband’s things lying down.

What this story, and many other stories in history, tell us about the relationship between culture, identity, power, and history is that whoever has the power and falls within the confines of the acceptable identity within a society will write history. Those in power are in control of the historical narrative and are the voices that we have heard for generations. If more diverse perspectives were recorded during this event, then countless lives could have been saved in other "witch trials" elsewhere. Exploring all voices and perspectives, especially marginalized ones, is the only way that we can gain the whole picture of a past event and the only way to preserve the truth for the future.

-Avery

After spending some time with the article, the term that stood out to me the most was the author Steve Katz's observation that the European witch hunts represented a "fear" of women by dominantly white, male Christian society. They rationalized this fear with how women might coerce or control men, and in that context was perceived as "sorcery." I felt this stood out as a topic of diversity because it represents a core inequality between men and women in society, where men used their power and influence to unfairly persecute and execute those who challenged their position of authority. Reading some of the anecdotes, it sounds like the only "crime" that occurred was that a woman demonstrated "patterns of verbal and physical aggression," as noted with the example of Isabel Young. The fact that her husband was a primary accuser helps to reinforce the notion that gender inequality and social norms played factors in the witch hunts of Scotland.

This resource also told us much about Christian European culture in the 17th century and how seriously people took accusations of witchcraft as an affront to their religious values or people's identity as a "servant of god" or some equivalent. We can still observe these disparities in gender identity today, where marginalized groups continue to be stereotyped. Any attempt to think or act differently might not simply be rejected but considered a threat to their society.

In the context of history, this map shows an evident and systematic pattern of persecution for women throughout Scotland. It highlights a crucial facet of history that the other resources from this week tried to impart. We can teach history in several ways, but its context is essential. Before reading this article, it made me think about the Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts. However, I didn't consider much about those events' underlying cultural, identity, and power factors. Now that I have learned more about these trials in other parts of the world, I can't help but wonder more about how diversity played a role in these historical events.

-Charles

Answers

From reading this article and both of my peers' responses, it is clear to see that the 16th and 17th century witch trials in Scotland were rooted in fear and systemic oppression of women and other marginalized groups.

Through the anecdotes presented, we can see the way in which women were framed as the ‘witch’ or the one in control due to their verbal and physical aggression. This paints a picture of how, at the time, certain gender roles were expected to be respected and any deviation from that was viewed as a threat to religious values and social norms.

Both my peers highlight the importance of understanding the way power played a role in these events and how crucial it is to look at a historical moment from all perspectives to gain a whole picture of the truth. This was insightful in getting me to think about the Salem Witch Trials and it further emphasizes the importance of recognizing all voices in history, especially marginalized ones.

When I was a child I used to watch many shows on Sri Krishna. As a result, I know many things about him. First of all, Sri Krishna was very fond of eating Makhan. Because of that he always used to steal it from his mothers’ kitchen. Therefore his name was ‘Natkahat Nand Lal’. Sri Krishna was dark-colored. So he was always worried about his color. The Hilly Sides hypothesis, offered by Robert Braidwood in 1948, proposes that agriculture began on the hilly flanks of the Taurus and Zagros mountains, where the climate was not drier, as Childe believed, and fertile terrain supported a diversity of flora and animals susceptible to domestication.

Archeologist Bryan Hayden developed the "feasting model idea" for the origins of agriculture. It claims that extravagant shows of authority necessitated intensive agriculture. Large quantities of food had to be prepared in order to routinely hold feasts as a means of asserting control.
