In Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), the Supreme Court determined that separate accommodations based on race were permissible. Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka (1954), decided 58 years later, that separate accommodations based on race were fundamentally unequal and hence unconstitutional.

The Brown case was significant because it invalidated the legal laws set by the Plessy v. Ferguson ruling, which permitted "separate but equal" practices. The 14th Amendment was construed in the Plessy case in such a way that legal equality could be achieved with segregated facilities.

What is the central position of the 14th Amendment?

The 14th Amendment indicates that no State shall make or execute any legislation limiting the privileges or immunities of United States citizens; nor shall any State deny any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law; nor shall any State refuse equal protection of the laws to any person within its jurisdiction.

a language that adds new features via additional releases is considered to be extensible. true false

Answers

The statement "a language that adds new features via additional releases is considered to be extensible" is generally true.

A language that can be extended with new features or capabilities is often referred to as extensible. This means that developers can add new functionality or modify existing features to suit their needs. However, it is important to note that being extensible does not necessarily mean that a language is easy to extend or that it has a well-designed extension mechanism. Some languages may have complex or poorly documented extension mechanisms that make it difficult to add new features. In addition, some languages may have limitations on what can be extended or modified.

In a long answer, we could explore some examples of programming languages that are known for their extensibility. For instance, Lisp is often cited as a highly extensible language because it has a simple syntax and powerful macro system that allows developers to create new syntax and functionality. Similarly, Python is also considered to be a highly extensible language because of its dynamic nature and support for metaprogramming.

To further explain, languages that are designed to be extensible typically provide mechanisms for developers to add new features or modify existing ones. For example, they may provide APIs, libraries, or plugins that allow developers to hook into the language's runtime or compiler. In some cases, the language may also provide a syntax for creating new constructs or defining new types.

In summary, a language that adds new features via additional releases is often considered to be extensible, but being extensible is not a guarantee of ease of use or a well-designed extension mechanism.

Option C is correct, Relationship with others in the organization is the aspect based on which social psychologists French and Raven have differentiated among five types of power bases individuals.

Five dynamics (or bases) of power were identified by John R. P. French and Bertram Raven (1959) after studying the intricacies of power in the late 1950s: referent, expert, legitimate, reward, and coercive. They described power as the main factor in getting another person to comply or produce outcomes. Power is the potential to exert influence over another individual or group, and in most cases, the holder of power has control over an aspect of the other individual's (or group's) desires. These definitions all share the common idea that an influential person was responsible for objectives being met (or behavior being altered).

How has the government faired in its responsibility to enforce safety laws

Answers

The effectiveness of the government in enforcing safety laws varies depending on the country and the specific laws and regulations in question. In general, it can be said that some governments have done better than others in fulfilling their responsibility to enforce safety laws.

In some cases, governments have been successful in enforcing safety laws by implementing rigorous inspection and monitoring systems, and by imposing strict penalties on those who violate safety regulations. These measures help to deter individuals and companies from engaging in unsafe practices and help to ensure that safety laws are adhered to.

However, in some other cases, governments may struggle to enforce safety laws due to a variety of reasons such as inadequate resources, lack of political will, or insufficient public awareness and education. This can result in a situation where safety laws are not effectively enforced, and individuals and companies may engage in unsafe practices without fear of being caught or punished.

Overall, it is important for governments to prioritize the enforcement of safety laws, as they play a critical role in protecting individuals and communities from harm. Comparitive
Politics: Democracy and Democratization

1)the
wave theory of democratization, 2) the transition paradigm, and 3)
modernization theory.

Answers

The three theories that are often discussed in the field of comparative politics when analyzing democracy and democratization are the wave theory of democratization, the transition paradigm, and modernization theory.

1) The wave theory of democratization refers to the idea that democratization occurs in waves or cycles. It suggests that democratization is not a linear process but rather occurs in bursts or waves, with periods of expansion and contraction. For example, after World War II, there was a wave of democratization in Europe and other parts of the world, followed by subsequent waves in the 1970s and the late 1980s. This theory emphasizes the importance of international factors, such as global norms and events, in influencing the spread of democracy.

2) The transition paradigm focuses on the process of transitioning from an authoritarian regime to a democratic one. It examines the factors and conditions that contribute to successful transitions to democracy. According to this paradigm, successful transitions require a combination of elite negotiations, civil society mobilization, and institutional reforms. For example, the peaceful transition from apartheid to democracy in South Africa is often cited as a successful case that adhered to the principles of the transition paradigm.

3) Modernization theory posits that democratization is a result of economic development and societal modernization. It argues that as societies become more economically developed and experience social changes, such as urbanization and education, they are more likely to transition to democratic forms of governance. For instance, many countries in Western Europe underwent industrialization and modernization in the 19th and early 20th centuries, which paved the way for the establishment of democratic systems.

These theories offer different perspectives on the factors that influence democracy and democratization. While the wave theory highlights the role of international dynamics, the transition paradigm focuses on domestic processes, and modernization theory emphasizes the importance of socio-economic factors. It is important to note that these theories are not mutually exclusive and can be used together to provide a more comprehensive understanding of democratization processes.

When things are traded in a market, or embedded in government tax statistics, they are relatively easy to measure. Many of our measurement difficulties arise precisely because some of the most valuable things are not easily measurable. GDP easily captures the output of washing machines, but not of happiness, health or environmental depreciation. Since we do not buy and sell clean air or moderate temperatures in a marketplace, governments are not automatically collecting statistics for use in national accounts data. The United Nations Human Development Index systematically tries to measure three broad dimensions of economic development - health, education and material standard of living - and produces annual statistics for all UN member countries. The map below shows the geographic range of outcomes - no prizes for guessing which colours represent prosperity and which represent poverty as measured by the Human Development Index. Health is crudely captured by life expectancy at birth, education by the proportion of the children enrolled at school and by the proportion of adults who can read, and material standard of living by per capita GDP. Some of these indicators are more stable than others. For example, before the financial crash, Iceland came top in the world in the UN measure, and Sierra Leone bottom. But Iceland's banks experienced the biggest crash of all, and the Icelandic economy got into serious trouble. This did not immediately affect its adult literacy or the life expectancy of its population, but these will gradually suffer unless economic prosperity can be restored. Like sausages, economic statistics simply reflect what you put into them. If you care about democracy, equality or environmental sustainability, don't get hung up merely because your country is not doing well on the particular things that GDP does measure. People who visit France quickly learn that the French have a good quality of life, better than you would expect simply by looking at their GDP. They enjoy a nice climate, long lunches, access to Mediterranean beaches and little congestion since they have plenty of land in relation to their population. They also retire at a relatively young age and, having long life expectancy, spend plenty of happy years in retirement. Their GDP statistics are measuring production of Renault and Peugeot, and of luxuries from Louis Vuitton and Herms, but omit plentiful leisure, lack of stress and little congestion. Similarly, the output of the police, civil service and teachers in schools is not charged for in the market and hence not automatically valued by the market. How do we measure the output of the police? Typically, national income statisticians measure the inputs (the wage bill of police forces, rent of police stations, the cost of using police cars and police computers). This is a large step in the right direction but it is far from perfect. If society becomes more unlawful, we end up choosing to have more police to counter crime. So GDP rises because we are spending more on the police force. But in reality, people are feeling less happy with the greater prevalence of crime, and resent having to 'waste' more resources on additional policing in order to counter the crime wave. Conversely, when we cut back the size of the army, GDP falls since less is being spent on the military, but we are actually receiving less defence as a consequence. Think of all this as a health warning on GNP and GDP statistics. They measure what they measure. Unless and until electorates want to spend a lot more money collecting more comprehensive statistics, GNP and GDP will use data already being collected annually for other purposes such as taxation.
